Beer packaging market to hit $39.31B by 2034 amid can surge

The global beer packaging market is poised for steady expansion, projected to reach USD 39.31 billion by 2034—up from USD 26.91 billion in 2025—driven by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.3% during the forecast period, according to market insights.

Beer, one of the world’s most consumed and historic alcoholic beverages, is seeing renewed focus on packaging as industry players aim to preserve flavour, extend shelf life, and distinguish their brands in a highly competitive landscape. The packaging phase has become just as crucial as brewing itself, especially as global beer production reached an impressive 1.89 billion hectolitres in 2022.

As consumer preferences shift and the craft beer revolution accelerates, packaging innovation is becoming a key differentiator. From traditional glass bottles to lightweight aluminium cans, PET bottles, and even pouches, manufacturers are exploring versatile and sustainable options to meet market demands.

Cans on the Rise

One of the most significant trends in recent years is the growing preference for cans over bottles. This shift is attributed to improved access to small-scale canning lines, changing consumer behaviours, and logistical efficiencies—especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cans are now a strategic asset in shaping consumer experiences and enabling brands to adapt rapidly to supply chain dynamics.

Asia Brewing Up Growth

Asia has emerged as the largest beer packaging market globally, fuelled by strong demand in countries like China, India, and Vietnam. Despite previous setbacks due to strict COVID-19 lockdowns, China’s reopening in early 2023 has paved the way for a rebound in on-premise consumption. Meanwhile, other Southeast Asian nations such as Malaysia, Cambodia, and Indonesia have witnessed strong volume rebounds since pandemic restrictions were lifted.

In 2022, beer production in Asia grew by 1.5%, reaching 579 million hectolitres. India, Thailand, and South Korea led the regional surge, contributing significantly to increased output. China continues to dominate in volume, but India is gaining attention as a rising star, with international giants like Heineken investing heavily in local breweries such as United Breweries.

The country’s growing middle class and improved household refrigeration are opening new opportunities for beer consumption in a traditionally spirits-dominated market.

Innovations in Asian Packaging

Asian brewers and packaging companies are pushing the envelope with novel and eco-friendly designs. In a notable development, Budweiser Brewing Company APAC hosted a circular packaging conference in November 2023 at its Putian Brewery in Fujian, China. The event focused on promoting sustainable practices under the “reduce-reuse-recycle-recover” model, further emphasizing the industry’s pivot toward low-carbon transitions.

North America: Fastest Growing Market

North America is anticipated to record the fastest growth rate in the beer packaging market during the forecast period. The U.S. and Canada are at the forefront, driven largely by the booming craft beer segment. While overall U.S. beer production dipped slightly in 2022, independent craft brewers held firm, accounting for 13.2% of the industry’s volume. This resilience underscores the region’s appetite for premium, small-batch brews packaged innovatively.

The rise of craft brewers has reshaped packaging preferences across the continent, with increased demand for sustainable materials, custom branding, and convenient formats.

Looking Ahead

The beer packaging market is undergoing a transformation shaped by innovation, regional dynamics, and evolving consumer habits. With Asia leading in volume and North America innovating rapidly, the industry is well-positioned for growth. As packaging continues to influence not just preservation but also brand storytelling, the future of beer packaging will hinge on adaptability, creativity, and sustainability.
