Natural Anti-Aging: Acupuncturist Shares Tips for Youthful Skin

Celebrity cosmetic acupuncturist outlines the everyday things that age you and offers eight tips on how to slow down the ageing process naturally

  • Celebrity clients want the latest trend: the intentional ageing look
  • Melissa Day will be speaking about a natural approach to facial rejuvenation at the forthcoming Niroshini Luxury Transformative Retreat, Suffolk 22-25 May 2023

Over time, it’s natural for the skin on our face to become thinner and drier and lose its fullness. Melissa Day, cosmetic acupuncturist and founder of Niroshini Cosmetic Acupuncture, explains that her celebrity clients are requesting an intentional ageing look – forgoing drastic procedures like surgical facelifts, for natural and effective treatments, that deliver real and long-lasting results.

Speaking ahead of the Niroshini Luxury Transformative Retreat, Melissa Day offers eight steps on how to slow down the ageing process naturally.

Repetitive facial expressions caused by hay fever symptoms

Premature ageing can be caused by repetitive facial expressions. As we enter hay fever season, seasonal allergy sufferers will find it hard to avoid sneezing, rubbing their eyes, nose and the sensitive skin on their face. Unfortunately, over time, these actions can damage the skin barrier and age the skin.

Adopting a holistic approach, Melissa suggests eating raw organic honey, produced by bees in your region. The honey has enzymes that help to metabolize your specific regional pollen. By eating a tablespoon of honey each day, will help you to become inoculated.  Also, drink peppermint tea, as it’s a great detoxifier, decongestant and anti-inflammatory. Finally, hydrate with plenty of spring or alkaline water throughout the day. Allergies signal the body’s increased production of histamine. In a well-hydrated body, foreign agents that cause allergies, neutralise rapidly.

Squinting equals fine lines

Squinting can cause fine lines around your eyes. If you’re doing this on sunny days, then wear sunglasses. If you’re squinting to try to read/watch TV, then you may need prescription glasses. Visit an optician.

Protect your skin from the sun every day, including on cloudy days

Wearing SPF every day is an important habit to form if you want to prevent premature ageing on your face. When it’s hot and sunny in the summer, it’s easy to remember to wear your SPF. However, for the purpose of age prevention, SPF is also needed in the winter because there are UV rays around us, all the time, even on a cloudy day. Therefore, starting to use your sunscreen daily and continuing to do this in the cooler months, will ensure that you stay looking youthful for as long as possible. During the cooler months, our skin can suffer from dryness. Therefore, an oil, that provides SPF, would be ideal. Organic red raspberry seed oil, has a SPF between 28 and 50 for UVA rays (up to SPF 8 for UVB rays).

Grab some ice for a red carpet look

If you’re going out and need an instant glow, dunk your face in a bowl of icy water, for around 15 seconds. It will reduce inflammation and puffiness, tighten the skin, by closing the pores and speed up soft tissue healing. This procedure works well, as a pre-make-up primer. If you want to step this technique up a notch, try organic, green tea ice cubes. Green tea has antivirus and antibacterial properties.

Cut down on salt and sugar

Salt is necessary for our bodies to function properly however, excessive salt intake, dehydrates your skin and makes your face look puffy whilst sugar affects your blood sugar levels which breaks down collagen and elastin. For a healthier alternative to table salt, opt for Himalayan Pink Salt, as it has 84 essential trace elements, required by the body. You can also use the Himalayan Pink Salt in your bath, as it draws out toxins from the skin. Try ditching sugar for natural alternatives, like date sugar, maple syrup and raw organic honey.

Quit smoking and cut down on alcohol

If you smoke then stop because it’s not only harmful to you and those around you but smoking speeds up the ageing process. It causes wrinkles and a dull complexion. Our cells require oxygen to function optimally. If you drink alcohol then try to drink less. Alcohol is ageing because it dehydrates the skin. Dehydrated skin is more likely to appear sallow and crepey. If you are looking to cut out alcohol, doing a liver cleanse, will be a great way, to give your immune system a reset – a non-alcohol lifestyle is trending!

Beauty sleep is essential

Sleep is the time when our body repairs and regenerates itself. During sleep our skin’s blood flow increases, making new collagen which prevents sagging. If you have problems sleeping, avoid caffeine before bedtime. Remove any distractions such as electronic devices and work from your bedroom. Make sure that your room is a cool, quiet, dark and relaxing place, for you to get your eight hours of beauty sleep.

Cosmetic acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture can be used to make you look younger. Acting as a non-surgical facelift, it addresses fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, facial contour and tone. This procedure involves 30+ needles being inserted into the face and it is also used as a preventative means to ageing.
