Watch out Londoners, a bold procession will strut down the iconic Kings Road next Saturday with over a hundred women celebrating being labelled “too much” this International Women’s Month.
If you’ve ever been told to “tone it down,” or felt the pressure to fade into the background as the years pass, the Mutton March is for you.
The inaugural Mutton March protest will see a sea of vibrant leopard print, clashing colours, and unapologetic style fill the streets of West London. But the event isn’t just a fashion statement, it’s a defiant response to the age-old “mutton dressed as lamb” insult, turning a phrase designed to shame women into a badge of pride.
From muttered insult to a national movement
The Mutton March idea was born out of a moment of modern-day street harassment. Amanda Fitzgerald, a business mentor who teaches women how to be visible, was standing outside Sloane Square station wearing gold cowboy boots and a bespoke leopard print hat when a passerby aimed the “mutton” comment at her.
“It felt so ironic that the very day I dared myself to wear my leopard print hat in public was the day I received the muttered mutton insult. Normally, when travelling to events, I keep the hat in my ‘shy bag’, hidden from public view until I arrive. But because I teach women business owners how to show up and be visible, I decided that was the day to fully own it and walk my talk,” she says.
“I was completely knocked off my perch when I heard those words. When I shared the incident on LinkedIn, hundreds of people commented with similar experiences, which made it clear this wasn’t just about me. That’s when I decided to create a movement: The Mutton March.”
Realising that the fear of being judged often leads to women becoming “invisible,” Amanda decided to swap the shy bag for a loud march.
A walking festival of visibility
More than 100 women have already signed up to join the protest, travelling from across the UK. Designed as a “walking festival,” the Mutton March will meet at Sloane Square at 1pm and before parading through the heart of SW3. The atmosphere promises to be celebratory rather than political, with organisers encouraging participants to bring daughters, nieces, and sisters to show the next generation that there is no age limit on taking up space.
The procession will culminate at Dovehouse Green, where attendees will hear uplifting speeches from inspiring women on the importance of staying visible and reclaiming their identity.
