UK Black Business Tribe Urban Entertainment Is Helping Students Gain Paid Work Experience In The Creative Industry

Black-owned Greenwich-based business Tribe Urban Entertainment has partnered with the University of Greenwich to offer six-month paid internships to eight first and second-year students that are interested in starting a career in the radio and broadcasting industries.

Tribe Urban Entertainment, who have described themselves as London’s premiere hub for content creation and production, have joined forces with the leading university in their community, the University of Greenwich, to offer this life-changing work experience program to the latter’s university students that will stand them in good stead once they enter the workforce.

The program will begin in March 2023 and aims to provide a clear path to employment for students interested in starting a career in radio and broadcasting industries. The flagship internship program will offer hands-on work experience across the radio and broadcast industries for the students taking part.

The students will work across Tribe Urban Entertainment’s businesses, including Tribe Urban Studios, and its radio station, Tribe Urban Radio, gaining industry-standard experience from journalism, broadcasting, and radio production to content creation, video production, and social media management.

For their flagship project, the students will produce a new radio show called the ‘Tribe Urban Top 30’, where they will handle every aspect of running the show, from producing and presenting the show in real-time to recording and editing it for on-demand listening to content creation for social media, and everything in between.

The partnership was officially announced at the University of Greenwich’s Cooper Powerhouse building in an event attended by over 50 students, as well as the University of Greenwich’s Head of School of Design, Professor Anastasios Maragiannis, and Tribe Urban’s founder and CEO, Michael Bullion, as well as Tribe Urban co-founder, Cynthia Tabi, Operations director George Osei-Oppong, and Operations and Marketing Director, Fred Jones-Lartey.

Its partner in this venture, The University of Greenwich is a public institution that operates on two heritage sites in London and Kent, serving over 35,000 students from 130 countries.

It has invested £80 million in teaching, sports, and social facilities over the last 5 years and has won five Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education.

The university has a “no limits” founding ethos, encouraging creativity and innovation to inspire new possibilities, and it aims to support individuals and communities to contribute to society. It has a global network of over 250,000 people and offers a vibrant environment for exploration and learning.

Speaking about their partnership with the University of Greenwich, Tribe Urban CEO Michael Bullion says,

“We believe that young graduates deserve the opportunity to gain proper employment in their chosen industry, and we want to help make that happen. If students continuously graduate without the clear opportunities of getting into the industry that they are spending money to get into in the first place, they will become more and more disillusioned with the whole concept of higher education. When I was a graduate, I witnessed just how difficult it is to gain employment within your prospective industry without any work experience, and I believe that this partnership can help many students gain the necessary work experience they need for them to gain meaningful employment after they graduate.”

On behalf of the University of Greenwich, Head of School of Design, Professor Anastasios Maragiannis adds that,

“It’s great that we celebrate our new partnership (with Tribe Urban Entertainment). The university is fortunate to have a large and diverse alumni community, and enjoy relationships with some of our most talented graduates […] Greenwich alumni and Tribe Urban CEO Michael Bullion has returned to offer eight work placements, so it’s a great honour to have this offer back from our graduate. Our university strategy is guided by principles that speak to this partnership – creating opportunities for individuals and society, building partnerships, and delivering impact, not only for us, but for the whole institute, for the community, for Greenwich, for London and beyond.”

The internship program is only open to first-year and second-year students studying courses in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, particularly the School of Stage and Screen and the School of Design.
