Has app development become too expensive in London?

London has long been one of Europe’s premier tech hubs, though it faces stiff competition from rising talents like Belgrade and the Baltics. With London being outside the EU’s free movement of labour zone, it cannot attract talent as easily from lower-income, highly educated nations.

As a result, London remains a strong ecosystem for startups and still possesses talent, but it comes at a cost. And rising prices, along with greater access to funding across the pond and lower corporate taxes in Ireland, is challenging London’s tech reputation for app development.

App development costs in London

As is often the case with app development, costs in London vary dramatically depending on complexity. Simple applications with basic functionalities can often range from £15,000 to £25,000, requiring just a couple of months to complete. Medium-complexity apps with some more advanced features and data handling, as well as third-party integrations, might push it well beyond the £50,000 mark. And, for enterprise solutions with custom UI/UX, it can feel as if there is no limit to development costs as they fly into six figures.

Developer rates are a big driver of these expenses. Junior developers in London charge approximately £300-£500 per day, while senior developers can ask for £600-£900 daily. When calculated hourly, it ranges between £50 to £150 per hour.

While other costs exist within development, high hourly invoicing can lead to many issues, such as premature launches or a lack of ongoing maintenance. Once the scope of the project is extended, budgets can break.

Underlying problems

One lesser-talked about reason driving these high costs is actually the geographical inequality of the UK. Being London-centric, all the growth occurs there, and this brings more workers, higher wages, and ultimately, higher costs. It’s not necessarily that salaries are particularly high (they’re significantly lower than the U.S., but on par with Western Europe), it’s that London is the most expensive city in the world for office space.

Brexit played a role in restricting the tech talent pool, and generally, many app developers in London are focused on enterprise, feature-rich solutions that lean towards a premium. This is partly because London is home to future unicorns, but also because this way, office overheads become a smaller proportion of the costs compared to an agency running on fine margins.

The rise of South American App Development

South America is quickly becoming the go-to alternative to London’s high-priced app development scene. Countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay have collectively large populations with growing education standards.

Many agencies are created because they can cater to the U.S., as they’re in similar time zones. This spare capacity, though, can be sought out by British companies looking to join in on the cheaper development costs. Uruguay is only three hours behind London, while Mumbai is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead, so when compared to a startup in LA, Montevideo’s time zone is actually closer to the UK.

Hourly rates for South American developers typically range between $30 and $70. But it’s not just about affordability, the landscape is undergoing infrastructure progress, meaning it has breathing space and optimism. English-speaking rates are rising dramatically due to social media, and are even higher among highly educated tech workers.

Top consultancy firms outside of London

Among the standout development consultancies targeting cost-conscious clients, UXDivers from Montevideo, Uruguay, has grown a strong reputation since 2015. It’s always a good sign to see a pre-Covid remote company, and this design-forward studio in particular focuses on UX/UI design and product design within app development. They differentiate themselves through rapid application development practices and creating highly aesthetic, intuitive interfaces. Over the past decade, UXDrivers has routinely proved capacity to deliver enterprise-grade solutions despite their boutique size.

BairesDev from Argentina is another great competitor. This is one of the largest software companies in Latin America, meaning they’ve got a broader range of solutions for both iOS and Android platforms. They reportedly hire only the top 1% of tech talent to ensure quality, and maintain competitive pricing because of the Argentinian labor market.

Another option from Uruguay is TowerHouse Studio. They’ve carved out a niche delivering high-quality mobile solutions within fintech. Their project methodology emphasises transparent collaboration, though it’s worth avoiding handing over any duties that require FCA regulatory knowledge. VAIRIX is another Montevideo-based firm that focuses on cross-platform development frameworks.

When deciding between London’s premium agencies and South American alternatives, it’s more than just an arbitrage opportunity over hourly rates. For certain projects—particularly those requiring deep domain expertise in UK-specific regulations, like fintech services, London may well justify its higher costs.

However, for many projects, especially those with defined scopes, South American development is currently offering unparalleled value. It may not last forever, particularly as more startups become comfortable collaborating remotely, but it’s currently one of many threats to London’s tech scene.
