The UK’s most Taylor Swift-obsessed cities revealed

Taylor Swift’s impact on the British music scene goes beyond just her catchy tunes; it’s a cultural phenomenon. From sold-out concerts to merchandise madness, Swifties across the UK are proving their dedication to their idol. But which cities stand out as the most Taylor Swift-obsessed? Let’s delve into the data and discover where Swift’s influence shines the brightest.

In a study conducted by Avid Panda, search data from Google revealed fascinating insights into the Taylor Swift frenzy gripping the nation. The research focused on the UK’s 50 most populated cities (excluding London boroughs), analysing searches for terms like “Taylor Swift merch,” “Taylor Swift poster,” “Taylor Swift t-shirt,” and “Taylor Swift tickets.” By normalising the data per 100,000 residents, the study uncovered the true epicentres of Swiftie culture.

While one may assume London, with its massive population and Swift’s numerous sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium, would claim the top spot, London ranks a respectable fourth, with 1,548 searches per 100,000 residents. Instead, it’s the smaller cities that take the lead, showcasing the depth of Swift’s influence beyond the capital.

Topping the list is the enchanting Scottish capital of Edinburgh, where Swift fever runs high with a staggering 2,710 searches per 100,000 residents. Following closely behind are Leeds (2,571) and Glasgow (2,129), proving that Swift’s appeal transcends geographical boundaries. Liverpool rounds off the top five with 1,458 searches, highlighting the nationwide phenomenon of Swiftie culture.

What sets these cities apart? Is it the allure of Swift’s storytelling prowess, her infectious melodies, or perhaps her personal interactions with fans?

A spokesperson at Avid Panda said, “Of course, Taylor Swift’s profound song writing and talent may initially draw people in. But the reason why she has such a dedicated fanbase is because she engages with them in a way that most celebrities today don’t.”

“Even during the early stages of her career, she built and maintained a special bond with her fans by inviting them to listening parties and producing fan-exclusive merchandise,” they added.

“Generally, as a celebrity’s stardom grows, these interactions become less frequent and personal. However, this is not the case with Swift. If anything, her interactions have become even more meaningful and well-thought-out, making her fans feel even more connected to her. In that sense, every time she goes number one or sells out a show, it feels like a win for not only Swift but her fans also. This shared sense of achievement is pulling more and more people into the Swift hype.”

Whatever the reasons, one thing is clear: Taylor Swift has woven herself into the fabric of British pop culture, leaving an indelible mark on cities large and small.

As we look ahead to 2025, where Swift’s influence is expected to double, with searches for the global popstar increasing by a further 102.69% in the UK. In 2022, there was an average of 292,981 monthly searches for Taylor Swift. But, in 2023, this increased by 190.96%, with Brits making an impressive 852,459 searches per month. The announcement of her new album and her highly anticipated return to the UK has further boosted her popularity, with average searches increasing by 26% in the past quarter alone.
