A colour and brand expert has created a “Joy First” method to help entrepreneurs, stressed-out perfectionists and parents struggling to keep up with modern life. Joy First the podcast by J.Nichole Smith or ‘Nic’ offers practical, science-backed tools to rediscover happiness and break free from burnout.
Nic, 42, is a joy and colour expert and brand architect with over twenty years of experience in using colour to evoke emotion and action in consumers. Her work has been featured in USA Today, Real Simple, and Condé Nast Traveler, and she has won numerous awards, including the prestigious European Product Design Gold award. Now she is using colour psychology to help people to build their own unique joy profile and ease symptoms of S.A.D this winter.
The series launches on the 6th of November and a preview of the first episode can be found here and will launch here. To celebrate season one Nic is also celebrating #JoyFriday instead of Black Friday on November 29th. The Joy Friday movement is an invitation to join Nic in a “beautiful rebellion.”
Nic, founder of Joy First, said:
“This year on black Friday, let’s fill our social feeds with joy in this crowd-sourced campaign to activate human hope. I’m inviting followers to post reels, stories, carousels, go live and do static posts to share their joy. All day on November 29th use the colour orange – the colour of joy – and the hashtags #joyfirstworld and #joyfriday. According to Colour Psychology orange is connected to physical comfort, abundance, play and joy. So share orange, let’s fill the feeds with orange on black Friday.”
The first season of Joy First centres around using colour to create joy, diving into fascinating topics that will inspire and uplift, like understanding how our personality types and colour preferences shape our individual definitions of joy.

Nic reveals how to change the colours you wear to change your day, colourful ways to ease Seasonal Affective Disorder, the advantage of choosing the foods you eat based on colour, and she introduces us to the ‘Four personality types of Christmas’ providing useful insights into how understanding colour preferences can make decorating, entertaining and gift-giving easier and more joyful than ever.
Nic explains why this podcast is essential for anyone feeling burnt out or run down by the pressures of modern life. She said:
“As a serial entrepreneur and a busy working mum with two young kids, distilling-down and sharing the principles of what I call ‘joy first’ living and working has been a total game changer for myself and my clients. I’m excited to finally share these joy first principles and our most popular recipes and rituals more widely, so more people can benefit from the transformative power that learning to prioritise joy can have.”
“We live in a world where hustle is rewarded, happiness isn’t, and fear is used to keep us in line. Joy First presents a bold alternative: living with joy as a priority. This podcast is a must-listen for anyone who feels like they spend most of their energy each day simply surviving.”
Through expert interviews, personal stories, and practical tips, listeners will learn how to make joy a priority without feeling like it’s just another task on their to-do list.
In a standout episode, she speaks with recurring guests, Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle & Justin Nai’im Hurdle-Price about the significance of colour in their lives, particularly in relation to identity, race, and culture, including the impact of a lifetime of navigating predominantly white spaces as individuals of colour.
Every episode in this first season offers unique, thought-provoking ways that embracing and understanding colour can make it effortless to experience more joy each day.
Launching on 6th of November with three episodes, then new episodes will be released bi-weekly.
