Canada sets 16 November opening for Red Seal completion bonus

Canada will open applications on 16 November 2026 for a C$5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus for eligible certified tradespeople. The payment is intended for journeypersons who have completed an apprenticeship and received certification in a designated Red Seal trade on or after 1 April 2025.

The federal government announced the application date on 23 October. The bonus forms part of Team Canada Strong, a wider skilled-trades programme. It is a future application opening, rather than an automatic payment to everyone who holds a Red Seal certification.

Who can qualify

A qualifying trade must be designated for the Red Seal programme in the province or territory where the person was certified. Applicants must have both completed an apprenticeship and obtained certification in that designated trade. Holding a trade role alone does not meet the stated test.

Applicants must also be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, and must not currently be attending high school. The conditions mean that eligibility depends on the individual’s certification, apprenticeship completion and status, as well as the designation of the trade in the relevant province or territory.

The C$5,000 amount applies to each qualifying Red Seal certification obtained from 1 April 2025. A journeyperson may receive the bonus for more than one designated Red Seal trade, but the programme sets a total maximum of C$50,000. The limit is therefore not a single payment available to every applicant.

What to prepare before applications open

The government has advised prospective applicants to gather their information before the portal opens. The stated requirements include a Social Insurance Number, mailing address, banking information for direct deposit, the Red Seal trade name and certification date, the province or territory of certification, and an apprentice identification number. An email address is optional but recommended.

Permanent residents whose Social Insurance Number begins with a 9, and protected persons, will also need proof of status in Canada. Additional documents may be requested depending on the province or territory of certification. Supporting documents must be submitted within 28 calendar days of beginning an application; otherwise, a new application will be needed.

There are different deadlines based on the certification date. People certified from 1 April 2025 to 15 November 2026 must apply by 31 May 2027. Those who receive certification on or after 16 November 2026 must apply within 12 months of their certification date.

Part of a wider skilled-trades plan

The bonus sits within the C$8 billion Team Canada Strong initiative, which aims to recruit, train and hire between 80,000 and 100,000 new Red Seal skilled-trades workers by 2030-31. That range is a programme target, not a count of workers already recruited or a guarantee of individual employment.

The broader plan includes support for apprenticeship training, work placements and measures intended to help employers hire apprentices. It also sets out a C$400 weekly top-up for eligible weeks of mandatory in-class technical training beginning on or after 3 January 2027, in addition to Employment Insurance benefits. That separate support has its own start date and conditions.

Existing federal apprenticeship support is also continuing through loans, project funding, tax credits and deductions, Employment Insurance benefits and the Red Seal programme. The new completion bonus is aimed at the point when an eligible apprentice has finished training and obtained a qualifying certification.

For prospective applicants, the immediate dates are 16 November for the portal opening and, for people already certified, 31 May 2027 for the stated deadline. Whether a person can receive the payment will depend on the programme’s full eligibility checks and the supporting documents submitted with the application.
