China mobilises rescue operation after magnitude 7 earthquake in Xizang

Local authorities in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region have reported 16 people dead and 65 injured after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu City late on Thursday. The earthquake occurred at 10:33pm local time on 22 October, which was 14:33:40 UTC, and had a reviewed depth of 18 kilometres. It was located 191 kilometres east-north-east of Nagqu.

The casualty figures were reported on Friday and remain preliminary. They describe the position known to local authorities at that point, rather than a final account of the earthquake’s impact. The number of people affected, the condition of damaged buildings and the full extent of disruption can change as rescue teams reach communities and inspections continue.

Rescue and relief response

China’s leadership has called for all-out search and rescue work for people who may be missing, alongside prompt medical treatment for those injured. The instruction also called for efforts to minimise casualties and for close monitoring of seismic activity and weather conditions, in part to guard against secondary disasters.

The affected area is at high altitude and faces low temperatures, conditions that can complicate relief work and the accommodation of residents after a major earthquake. The Ministry of Emergency Management and authorities in Xizang have mobilised resources for rescue and relief operations. The stated priorities include accommodating affected residents, restoring damaged infrastructure as quickly as possible and protecting lives and property.

Those announced measures should not be read as confirmation that each task has already been completed. Emergency operations develop as access, weather, local needs and damage assessments become clearer. No total for people missing or displaced was included in the initial update, and no detailed assessment of damage to homes, roads or essential services was set out there.

Shaking and the possibility of aftershocks

The earthquake has been reviewed at magnitude 7.0. A preliminary seismic assessment estimated that about 111,000 people experienced moderate to severe shaking, ranging from level V to level VIII on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale. That is an estimate of likely ground shaking across an area, not a casualty total and not a count of people who need assistance.

Magnitude measures the size of an earthquake at its origin. Intensity instead describes or estimates how strongly shaking is experienced at particular locations, so it can vary considerably across the affected region. The assessment also says aftershocks may follow, including some that could produce strong shaking. It does not predict when or where they may occur.

Earthquake setting

The quake occurred within the Tibetan Plateau, a seismically active region. The reviewed scientific assessment describes it as normal faulting within the plateau, where complex crustal movement linked to the convergence of the India and Eurasia plates drives the uplift of the Himalaya and the plateau itself. The analysis is an explanation of the earthquake’s setting, not an indication that another event is imminent.

For now, the confirmed picture is of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, an initial local toll of 16 deaths and 65 injuries, and a relief operation that has been mobilised. Further official updates will be needed to establish the scale of damage, the needs of residents and whether the casualty figures change.
