Crypto politics: Bukele, Milei, and Trump lead the charge

El Salvador, Argentina, and the U.S. are emerging as key players in the global crypto landscape. Leaders Nayib Bukele, Javier Milei, and Donald Trump are pushing for greater adoption despite resistance from institutions like the IMF.

El Salvador has increased its daily Bitcoin purchases despite pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), now holding approximately 6,111 Bitcoins. In December 2024, the Salvadoran government and the IMF agreed to a $1.4 billion loan to “support the government’s reform agenda,” part of a broader financing package exceeding $3.5 billion over a 40-month period.

These agreements also highlight “potential risks” associated with Bitcoin, stating that the Salvadoran “project will be diminished significantly in line with Fund policies.” El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, sees cryptocurrencies as tools for financial independence, a view not widely supported by the IMF or many of his fellow world leaders.

However, his good relations with Javier Milei and Donald Trump, along with their mutual support, create a favorable environment for The Three Crypto Presidents to position the Americas at the forefront of a blockchain-based digital economy.

El Salvadoran Commitment to Bitcoin

In January 2025, the Salvadoran Congress amended certain laws to adhere to December’s agreement with the IMF, passing the measures with a 55-2 vote. Nevertheless, the government continues its daily Bitcoin acquisitions through mining and direct purchases.

On March 3, the IMF raised concerns with the Salvadoran government, urging it to stop not only Bitcoin acquisitions but also issuing debt or tokenised securities linked to cryptocurrency. Nayib Bukele responded defiantly:

“If we didn’t stop when the world ostracised us and most ‘bitcoiners’ abandoned us, we won’t stop now, and we won’t stop in the future.”

This persistence likely stems from a belief that cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin in particular, will generate more wealth for a country grappling with a fiscal deficit than fiat currency alone.

Argentina’s Economic Overhaul: More Painful Than Expected

What’s indisputable is that Milei is delivering on his promises — cutting government spending, opening markets to investors, and reducing or even eliminating taxes. However, for those used to a government safety net, many Argentinians are struggling to adapt in such turbulent times.

Even though crypto is not legal tender in Argentina as it is in El Salvador, it remains a widely used investment vehicle. What’s more, Argentina is implementing various laws to enhance transparency, provide regulatory clarity, and ensure financial stability for investors, including a requirement for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) to register with the government.

These two models share similarities — Milei is cutting spending, while Bukele is resisting the IMF and may ultimately reject the $3.5 billion loan.

During his visit to Buenos Aires, Bukele said,

“I have the best impression in the world about Milei. I love what he does. We are friends, and we will achieve good things for both countries.”

Earlier, Milei attended Bukele’s inauguration, as well as Donald Trump’s in 2025.

White House Crypto Summit

Much has been said about the new U.S. president’s efforts to position the country as a global crypto leader. The latest initiative was the Crypto Summit held in the White House.

Two days before the event, JP Morgan released a sceptical report on the cryptocurrency markets, stating that digital assets are likely to remain under pressure due to a lack of positive price drivers and uncertainty about whether Congress will approve a U.S. crypto reserve.

The summit introduced proposals for a federal law regulating stablecoins in the name of transparency and stability, as well as discussions about Bitcoin’s unique status among cryptocurrencies in light of the announced crypto reserve. A look at the latest crypto heatmap reflects these developments, showing BTCUSD down approximately 8.86% since the summit, while stock market leaders like NVDA and AAPL saw gains of 1.92% and 1.59%, respectively. The crypto market is facing challenges, but its long-term trajectory remains a topic of debate among investors and policymakers alike.
