Nuffield Health completes first, robotic gynaecological procedure using da Vinci Xi surgical system

Nuffield Health’s Parkside Hospital has successfully completed its first gynaecological procedure – a robotic extrafascial hysterectomy operation – using the revolutionary da Vinci Xi surgical system.

Installed at Parkside Hospital in 2023, the da Vinci Xi surgical system empowers surgeons to perform a wide range of complex procedures using robotic assisted technology, allowing for smaller, more precise incisions. The advanced system brings a number of benefits, including fewer complications, such as reduced blood loss and risk of infection, and a significantly enhanced patient experience. Patients benefit from less invasive procedures, shorter recovery times and reduced chances of readmission. The shorter timescales can also result in more patients gaining access to these vital services.

Alongside the successful hysterectomy operation, the da Vinci Xi can also be utilised across a range of women’s health procedures, including treatments for endometriosis, myomectomy, menopause-related symptoms and gynaecological cancers, as well as other complex health conditions.

This innovative technology provides an alternative treatment path for both private and NHS patients, highlighting Nuffield Health’s commitment to improving the lives of patients whilst also supporting the NHS to reduce the elective care waiting list.

More than 12 million procedures have been performed with Da Vinci Xi surgical systems on patients worldwide, and there are more than 34,000 independent studies that suggest robotic-assisted surgery with a da Vinci Surgical System can offer patients demonstrated benefits compared with open surgery.

Professor Jayanta Chatterjee, Gynaecology Consultant at Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital, said:

“It was a tremendous milestone to successfully complete the first gynaecological procedure at Parkside using the da Vinci Xi robot. The installation and utilisation of this advanced technology enable us to perform a greater amount of operations across a wide range of women’s health conditions, as well as wider complex health conditions.

“With NHS waiting lists tripling in the past decade, we are incredibly proud to provide essential care to those who struggle to access it, and do so in a way that prioritises safety and comfort for our patients.”
