The awards show where five winners strut the purple carpet

Typically, award categories feature only one winner per category. However, The Mainstream Awards challenge the norm by recognising five winners in each category, emphasising that there is space for everyone to win. Founded by Remel London, the awards aim to celebrate underrepresented talent within the creative industry.

The Ones To Watch awards ceremony, held on 7 February at Rich Mix in the heart of London’s creative scene, Shoreditch, welcomed over 100 guests, including 50 excited winners across 10 categories, such as acting, comedy, podcasts, and presenting.

BBC Asian Network presenter Smash Bengali, recipient of the Best Comedian plaque, took to Instagram to express the importance of feeling “appreciated, recognised & celebrated” as a creative in an industry where the BAME community is often underrepresented. The award was presented by comedian and Britain’s Got Talent 2022 winner, Axel Blake, whose own journey from the comedy circuit to national recognition mirrors the award’s celebration of rising talent.

Other awards presented on the night included Best Radio Presenter, which was awarded by BBC 1Xtra and radio legend Remi Burgz. The winners included Eazy London, presenter of The Beat London, who brought incredible energy to the stage, and Jasmine Rowland from Reprezent Radio, both of whom showcased the vibrant talent within the radio industry.

Winners left the ceremony with a box full of goodies from sponsors Creme of Nature, as well as beautifully designed plaques created by Recreate HQ. Attendees were treated to performances from stand-up comic Leah Davis and a DJ set from 18 year old DJ Taylor-Rae as they dug into delicious grub from food sponsors German Doner Kebab. Debra Chosen added her charm on the purple carpet as the roving reporter, capturing exclusive moments throughout the evening.
