Culture and Brand Expert Nick Ede’s Guide to the best salads in London

If you are like me and you have the idea that a salad is a bit of dressing on some boring leaves then think again. London is full of fabulous eateries that have delicious salads that tantalise the tastebuds and fill you up too. Gone are soggy romaine lettuce and mayo and in are some really innovative takes on the traditional salad bowl.

CHOP IT LIKE IT’S HOT at Choppaluna

After success in Germany and their first London site in Bloomsbury (*ranked #6 out of more than 1,800 restaurants in London for quick bites), the fast, fresh, to-go salad bar has now opened at 314 High Holborn.

Healthy, to-go eating options are becoming more popular than ever in the city but Choppaluna is here to show that salads don’t have to be bland and boring. Its deliciously, guilt-free-indulgence menu offers a huge choice of meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options and all your favourite superfoods, there is something for everyone.

The vibrant experience allows customers to watch the brand’s talented team chop everything finely in front of their eyes with over 60 fresh toppings, perfect for customised combinations. It’s not only salads that get chopped and served at Choppaluna, guests can also choose to go for a ‘Big Roll’ wrap or a mouth-watering ‘Luna Melt’ (a modern take on Quesadillas with a cheese base and fresh toppings, grilled to perfection).

The Salad Project – salad for good

London-based healthy eatery The Salad Project is teaming up with low-waste chef and award-winning author Max La Manna to launch a zero-waste vegan. The Zero-Waste Salad will be available to order for £10.75 from their Bank and Spitalfields restaurants, as well as for delivery exclusively via UberEats.

Using repurposed waste from the Salad Project, Max relied on a combination of sustainably sourced, vibrant, fresh and flavoursome vegan ingredients to create the bespoke salad, comprising of kale, pearl barley, sweet potato, pomegranate seeds, shredded slaw, no-waste cauli leaf pesto, vegan feta and spicy popcorn cauliflower, dressed with a pomegranate vinaigrette.

£1 of every The Salad Project x Max La Manna salad sold over the period will be donated to Salad Project’s partner charity Bite Back 2030, founded by chef Jamie Oliver: a youth-led movement working towards a world where all young people have the opportunity to be healthy, no matter where they live. Bite Back works tirelessly to raise awareness on healthy and nutritious eating for children, as well as campaigning for extending free school meals for children in poverty across the UK.

Green with envy? Then try Urban Greens

Set up by three friends Rushil Ramjee, Houman Ashrafzadeh and Yannis Divas, Urban Greens is a refreshing new salad bar concept, with a slick interior design to match.

What’s made the openings so successful is Urban Greens’ commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients – locally sourced whenever possible – and their tried and tested expertise in creating bold, memorable dishes. Each store offers 12 carefully crafted menu choices. And that’s it.

Forget buffet-style salad bars that encourage hungry customers to randomly mix beetroot balls and potato salads into plastic containers. There are no pre-made boxes at Urban Greens. Instead, customers choose bowls such as Gogosan or Jakarta and watch every order made up in front of them.

A long line of fresh premium ingredients includes the likes of ginger-pickled carrots and sesame-marinated glass noodles; leaves have made way for tenderly massaged shredded greens and every meal is sprinkled with perfectly toasted nuts, flavoursome fresh herbs and accompanied with complex signature dressings, all in compostable or 100% recyclable packaging.

Salads range from £8.85 – £12.85  available currently in Canary Wharf and St James’s Park  with more opening soon.
