High Street Kensington brings back its creative spirit with four fabulous September markets

From vintage fashion and vinyl to botanical treasures and brilliant street food, High Street Kensington is transforming every Saturday in September into a celebration of independent shopping, creativity and London culture.

The area will host four distinctive markets throughout the month, forming its biggest independent retail programme to date. The line-up includes two new events timed to coincide with London Design Festival and London Fashion Week.

For anyone who remembers the legendary Kensington Market, this feels like a joyful nod to the area’s rebellious retail past. Open from 1967 until 2000, the original market helped shape London’s alternative fashion scene and became a playground for punks, goths, new romantics, ravers and emerging designers.

Long before pop-ups and concept stores became fashionable, Kensington Market gave small businesses and young creatives an affordable place to experiment. Now, some of that individuality and energy is returning to the high street.

Botanical Market, Saturday 5th September

The month begins with the Botanical Market, a gorgeous celebration of everything green and floral.

Visitors will be able to browse plants, pots, pictures and botanical-inspired fashion, alongside vintage furniture and decorative pieces for the home and garden. It sounds like the perfect place to pick up something unusual for your house or add a little more greenery to your life.

All Ears Market, Saturday 12th September

Music and design lovers should make a date for the brand-new All Ears Market, which arrives during London Design Festival.

Expect records, independent merchandise, zines and pan-Asian street food curated by SHŌTENGAI Market. There will also be talks featuring artists, DJs, musicians, designers and technologists exploring the relationship between music, sound and visual culture.

An accompanying programme of short music films and conversations will take place inside the Lecture Theatre at Kensington Central Library. Entry is free when visitors support one of the market’s food traders by purchasing a meal.

The programme is being curated by Blue Screen, with names including Honest Jon’s, Caravan Records, Diet Cola Records and Velocity Press expected to be involved.

Judy’s Vintage Market, Saturday 19th September

The standout event arrives during London Fashion Week, when Judy’s Vintage Market makes its High Street Kensington debut.

Inspired by the individuality and creative energy of the original Kensington Market, this huge fashion-focused event will bring together more than 50 traders.

Shoppers can discover emerging designers, independent makers, sustainable and upcycled fashion, vintage clothing, jewellery, accessories and textiles. It promises to be the perfect hunting ground for one-off pieces that you certainly will not find in every shop window.

At a time when many of us are thinking more carefully about where our clothes come from, the market also offers a stylish and more sustainable alternative to fast fashion.

Big Flea Market, Saturday 26th September

The month concludes with the return of the hugely popular Big Flea Market.

More than 60 carefully selected independent stalls will offer vintage fashion, furniture, collectables and all manner of unexpected treasures. Whether you are searching for a statement chair, a fabulous coat or simply enjoy rummaging for something with a story behind it, this is the place to be.

Together, these four markets will make High Street Kensington one of London’s most exciting shopping destinations this September.

In a city where so many high streets can feel increasingly similar, it is wonderful to see independent designers, traders and makers being given the opportunity to take centre stage. Kensington has always had creativity in its DNA, and this month-long programme promises to bring that spirit roaring back to life.

All four markets will take place on Phillimore Walk in Kensington and open at 10am. All Ears Market will run until 6pm, while the Botanical Market, Judy’s Vintage Market and Big Flea Market will close at 4.30 pm.
