Press Release
The hottest thing you’ll taste this summer? A candle you can dip your crisps into

Hot sauce has officially become the new ketchup. Once reserved for daredevils and chilli fanatics, it’s now a handbag essential, a social media obsession and, if celebrity culture is anything to go by, the condiment of the moment. Beyoncé is said to carry hot sauce in her bag, Dua Lipa has fuelled the internet’s obsession with fiery flavours, and now British snack brand PROPER is taking things to a whole new level.

The brand has created what could be one of the most unexpected foodie launches of the summer a bottled version of its cult House Hot Sauce alongside an edible hot sauce candle that melts into a warm dipping sauce for crisps.

The House Hot Sauce was originally created by PROPER’s development chef Ed Ibbotson as the flavour base for the brand’s new House Hot Sauce Lentil Chips. Instead of following the usual route of making a spicy crisp, the team worked backwards, perfecting the sauce first before creating the snack around it.

It’s a clever approach because, let’s face it, too many spicy snacks are all heat and no personality. PROPER’s version is designed to deliver layers of flavour as well as a satisfying kick, blending fresh jalapeños with deeper fruity and savoury chilli notes that build gently rather than blowing your head off.

The result is a sauce that’s genuinely enjoyable enough to use on everything from tacos and burgers to eggs and pizza, and now you can buy it in a limited-edition 100ml bottle for £7.

But the real conversation starter is undoubtedly the edible candle.

Light the wick, allow the candle to melt, and, instead of wax, you’re left with warm hot sauce ready to dip your lentil chips into. It transforms snacking into something far more theatrical, turning an everyday bag of crisps into an experience worthy of TikTok.

It also taps perfectly into the growing trend for what I like to call “experiential eating”. Consumers don’t just want food anymore they want rituals, moments and products that feel shareable. Whether it’s butter boards, viral cookies or luxury condiment collaborations, people increasingly want snacks that come with a story.

PROPER calls the idea “Practice PROPER Snacking” encouraging us to slow down, indulge and enjoy life’s little pleasures. In a world obsessed with wellness routines, ice baths and endless optimisation hacks, there’s something refreshingly honest about suggesting that sometimes self-care simply means sitting down with a really good snack.

The launch is also a masterclass in scarcity marketing. Both the sauce and the candle are available exclusively through PROPER’s TikTok Shop, with no planned restocks once they’re gone. It’s a strategy that has worked brilliantly for beauty brands, fashion labels and streetwear, and now food brands are embracing the same drop culture.

If you’re someone who loves discovering the next viral food trend before everyone else, this is one to keep an eye on.

The PROPER House Hot Sauce (£7) launches on 25 June, followed by the ultra-limited Edible Hot Sauce Candle (£30) on 6 July, exclusively through PROPER’s TikTok Shop.

PROPER’s House Hot Sauce Lentil Chips (£2.20) are also available now from Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s for anyone wanting a taste of the trend without having to race the internet.
