London to host final leg of 2027 World Aquatics World Cup with LA28 places at stake

London to host final leg of 2027 World Aquatics World Cup with LA28 places at stake

London will host the final stop of the 2027 World Aquatics World Cup, bringing a three-meet international series to the London Aquatics Centre from 29 to 31 October. Aquatics GB says it has secured a hosting agreement with World Aquatics for the event, which will be staged in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The London competition will follow Berlin, hosting from 15 to 17 October, and Paris, from 22 to 24 October. The sequence places the British capital at the end of the circuit and gives it a role in deciding the last two of six direct qualification events for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The 2027 series will be the World Cup’s return to European venues for the first time since 2023, according to the organisers.

The Olympic qualification opportunity is confined to six newly introduced 50-metre events: men’s and women’s 50m butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke. Berlin will decide the men’s 50m backstroke and women’s 50m butterfly places. Paris will determine the men’s 50m butterfly and women’s 50m breaststroke qualifiers. London’s final sessions will settle the men’s 50m breaststroke and women’s 50m backstroke places.

The organisers say preliminary heats will take place on the morning of the first day of each stop, followed by quarter-finals that evening. Semi-finals are scheduled for the evening of day two, with the final day reserved for eight-lane finals. The top six finishers in each designated final are due to secure a place at LA28. That format gives London’s two qualifying races a defined role in the Olympic pathway, rather than making the stop simply the last date on the calendar.

The three disciplines are being added to the Olympic programme at 50m for LA28. The World Cup announcement describes the series as a chance for swimmers to earn direct qualification in those events; it does not mean that every race at the London meet will award an Olympic place. The qualification races assigned to the London stop are specifically the men’s breaststroke and women’s backstroke.

The London Aquatics Centre was the swimming venue for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The event organisers describe the 2027 meet as the first “benchmark global swimming competition” in Great Britain since those Games. That wording distinguishes this competition from other international swimming events that may have taken place in the intervening years, and should not be read as saying Britain has hosted no international swimming at all since 2012.

Aquatics GB says it worked with UK Sport and the Greater London Authority on the successful bid. The announcement confirms the host agreement and dates, but gives no ticket-sale date, session timetable or ticket prices. Fans can register interest in tickets through the event organisers, while practical attendance details remain to be announced.

With qualification places still available at the final stop, the London dates offer a home-city setting for the conclusion of the European leg of the circuit. The meet is scheduled a year before the Los Angeles Games, and its two designated races will complete the six-event programme offering direct qualification set out for the 2027 World Cup.
