Milwaukee Brewers beat Tampa Bay Rays 4–1 to win first World Series title

Milwaukee Brewers beat Tampa Bay Rays 4–1 to win first World Series title

The Milwaukee Brewers won their first World Series title on Wednesday 28 October 2026, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 4–1 in Game 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The victory sealed the best-of-seven series four games to one.

Milwaukee, the away team, finished the deciding game with four runs on eight hits and two errors. Tampa Bay managed one run on four hits and committed no errors, with its only run coming with two outs in the ninth inning.

The Brewers secured the championship the night after a 4–3 defeat in 12 innings in Game 4 had denied them a sweep. Their Game 5 victory completed an 11–2 postseason following a franchise-record 103 wins during the regular season.

How Game 5 unfolded

Rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt drove in the opening run in the second inning. Brice Turang doubled and Sal Frelick was hit by a pitch before Pratt singled to centre, bringing Turang home to give Milwaukee a 1–0 lead.

The Brewers doubled their advantage in the fifth through another sequence of singles. Pratt reached first, Garrett Mitchell followed with a single and David Hamilton then singled to score Pratt. That hit by Pratt was his sixth consecutive hit in the Series, reported as a rookie record.

Milwaukee added two more runs in the sixth. Christian Yelich was hit by a pitch, and William Contreras doubled him home. Pratt then delivered a sacrifice fly to score Contreras, extending the Brewers’ lead to 4–0. Pratt finished Game 5 with two hits and two RBIs.

Jacob Misiorowski earned the win after pitching five and two-thirds scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, walked one batter, hit another and struck out two before leaving with a reported right-calf cramp. JoJo Romero completed the sixth inning, Abner Uribe recorded two outs in the seventh and closer Trevor Megill worked the final two innings.

Tampa Bay’s only run arrived with two outs in the ninth. Liam Hicks doubled and Chandler Simpson followed with an RBI double. Megill then retired Richie Palacios on a groundout to end the game and confirm Milwaukee’s championship.

Drew Rasmussen took the loss for the Rays, allowing one run and two hits in four innings. Kevin Kelly, Garrett Cleavinger, Tyler Wells, Steven Matz, Bryan Baker and Ian Seymour also pitched for Tampa Bay.

Contreras was named World Series Most Valuable Player after collecting eight hits in 21 at-bats, a .381 average, and four RBIs across the five games. His RBI double in Game 5 was part of the decisive sixth inning.

Jackson Chourio recorded 11 hits across the Series, reported as a five-game World Series record. His total and Pratt’s consecutive-hit sequence were individual milestones alongside Milwaukee’s first championship.

A first title for the franchise

The title completed a season in which Milwaukee won the National League Central before beating San Diego in the Division Series and sweeping Los Angeles in the Championship Series. The Brewers then won four of their five World Series games against Tampa Bay.

The franchise began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and moved to Milwaukee the following year. Its only previous World Series appearance was in 1982, when the Brewers lost Game 7 to St. Louis. This championship came 44 years after that appearance and ended a 57-year championship drought for the franchise.

It was Milwaukee’s first World Series celebration since the Milwaukee Braves won in 1957. That earlier championship, however, belongs to a different franchise and is not a previous Brewers title. The Game 5 victory therefore stands as the first World Series championship in Brewers history.

For Tampa Bay, the defeat left the club without a title in three World Series appearances. The Rays, an expansion franchise that began play in 1998, had previously lost the Series in 2008 and 2020.
