NatWest shares fall after Q3 results as 2027 margin outlook disappoints

NatWest shares fell 8.4% in intraday trading on 30 October 2026 after its third-quarter results, according to a report published that day. The report attributed investor disappointment to a weaker-than-expected interest-income outlook for 2027, despite operating profit being in line with the average analyst forecast. The share-price move was an intraday observation, not a verified closing-price change.

The same report said executives told analysts they expected the group’s net interest margin to remain broadly stable at 2.5% into 2027. That indication of future performance was reported as weaker than investors had expected, making the outlook the focus of the negative market reaction.

The results and the reported share-price fall therefore presented a contrast: third-quarter profit met the average forecast, but management’s expectation for margins into the following year disappointed. The quarterly earnings figure alone did not explain the decline described in the report.

Quarterly profit meets forecasts

NatWest’s results presentation, dated 30 October 2026, reported group operating profit of £2.225 billion for the third quarter. It also recorded a group net interest margin of 2.50% for the same three-month period.

The operating profit was £2.2 billion when expressed to one decimal place, the rounded figure used in the reported comparison with the average analyst forecast. The more precise £2.225 billion total gives the company’s reported quarterly result.

Being in line with that average forecast placed the profit result at the expected level. The reported disappointment was instead associated with the interest-income outlook, separating the assessment of the completed quarter from expectations for the period ahead.

The margin reported by the company for Q3 was 2.50%, while executives were reported as using a level of 2.5% in describing their expectation for 2027. Those are the same percentage, expressed with different numbers of decimal places.

Expecting the margin to remain broadly stable at that level pointed to continuity from the third-quarter figure, rather than a substantial increase. According to the report, that prospect left investors disappointed, even though operating profit had matched the average forecast.

Expectations for 2027

In its third-quarter interim statement, NatWest said it had reaffirmed the outlook given with its H1 2026 results. That formal reaffirmation sat alongside the executives’ reported comments to analysts about the expected path of net interest margin.

The statement also added that the bank expected risk-weighted assets of around £210 billion on 1 January 2027, including Basel 3.1. The figure was presented as an expectation for that date, rather than a reported Q3 result.

The risk-weighted assets estimate is distinct from the quarterly profit and margin figures. The latter describe performance already reported for Q3; the risk-weighted assets figure looks ahead to the start of 2027 and includes Basel 3.1.

The estimate was given as around £210 billion, retaining an element of approximation. Similarly, management’s reported margin expectation was for broad stability into 2027, not a result that had already been achieved in that year.

The two 2027 indications also referred to different timeframes. The risk-weighted assets estimate specified 1 January, whereas the reported margin comments described broad stability into the year. Neither was a statement of a completed 2027 result.

For investors, the key contrast identified in the report was between earnings that met the average forecast and an interest-income outlook that fell short of expectations. Reaffirming the existing outlook did not prevent the reported 8.4% intraday fall in the shares on the day of the results; that observation does not establish the closing-price movement.
