Why changing gender roles and independent lifestyles are reshaping expectations of modern dating.
From London’s financial district to Europe’s leading business capitals, women are shaping industries, leading companies and making decisions that influence entire organisations. Yet in parts of the private matchmaking industry, a traditional model persists: men commission the search, while women are presented as potential matches.
Munich-based international matchmaking boutique Poise & Privée is questioning this convention. Founded by Tamara Birner, the company places women in the position of the client rather than the candidate, reflecting changing expectations around relationships, independence and gender roles.

An Industry Still Shaped by Traditional Gender Roles
Private matchmaking has historically often been associated with affluent male clients seeking suitable female partners. Women, meanwhile, have frequently been recruited into matchmaking networks rather than directing the search themselves.
“The idea that men should commission the search while women wait to be discovered feels increasingly outdated,” says Tamara Birner, founder of Poise & Privée. “Women know what they want. They should be able to define the search and have a professional working on their behalf.”
The discussion extends beyond who pays for matchmaking. It also concerns who determines the criteria and ultimately defines what a suitable relationship looks like.
A Different Understanding of Modern Relationships
Professional achievement has changed women’s lives, but traditional expectations surrounding relationships have not always kept pace.
Can a woman lead professionally while preferring a more traditional relationship dynamic privately? Does female empowerment require women to abandon established preferences, or should independence also mean having the freedom to choose them?
Birner believes these questions deserve closer examination.
“An ambitious woman should not have to downplay her achievements to make a relationship work. Equally, a successful man should not be defined solely by his status or income. What matters is whether two people genuinely complement each other.”
For Birner, equality in relationships does not necessarily mean that both partners must have identical roles. Rather, it involves the freedom to establish a relationship dynamic that reflects their individual personalities, values and expectations.
Why the Best Match May Not Be in a Database
Not everyone who is open to a relationship is actively looking for one. Many potential partners are not registered with dating platforms or matchmaking agencies, making personal networks and direct outreach another way of connecting people who might otherwise never meet.
Drawing on more than 15 years of experience in Executive Search, Birner applies a different principle to partner searches.
Unlike traditional matchmaking models built around large membership databases, Birner works with a deliberately limited number of female clients. Each search is conducted individually, with particular attention to personal circumstances, relationship expectations and discretion.
“For me, exclusivity is not about status or luxury. It is about the time, attention and personal commitment that an individual search requires. I don’t believe this is something that can be done on a large scale,” says Birner.
Instead of beginning with a fixed pool of candidates, Poise & Privée conducts individual searches and approaches potentially suitable men directly, including those who are not actively using dating platforms or matchmaking services.
“Some of the most interesting potential partners are simply not participating in the conventional dating market,” explains Birner. “They may have demanding careers, international lifestyles or established social circles. Reaching these individuals requires a more proactive and personalised approach.”
However, identifying someone who meets a set of criteria is only the beginning.
“A professional profile can provide useful information, but it cannot tell you whether two people will connect emotionally. That is something you can only begin to understand through personal interaction,” says Birner.
Why London Is a Relevant Market
Modern careers and lifestyles rarely follow strict geographical boundaries. Professionals relocate, work across multiple countries and maintain networks that extend beyond their place of residence.
Birner sees London as a particularly promising market for Poise & Privée. With its international business community, entrepreneurial culture and diverse professional networks, the city provides an interesting environment for a more individual approach to partner searches.
“London brings together people from very different backgrounds who are often accustomed to living and working across borders. I find that particularly interesting because their expectations of relationships may be shaped by several cultures and different life experiences,” says Birner.
She believes that finding a suitable partner involves more than expanding the geographical search.
“For me, private matchmaking has always been about understanding the individual rather than simply matching profiles. Someone may appear suitable on paper, but that does not necessarily mean they share the same outlook on life or relationships.”
Professional commitments, willingness to relocate, cultural backgrounds and future plans can all influence whether a relationship has the potential to develop into a lasting partnership.
Compatibility Is More Than a Professional Profile
A successful career or impressive professional background does not automatically translate into relationship compatibility.
Education, financial stability and professional circumstances may provide useful context, but they reveal relatively little about how someone behaves in a relationship.
Emotional availability, communication and shared expectations about commitment are often more difficult to assess.
One important distinction is between personal preferences and fundamental relationship requirements. While education, appearance or professional background may influence initial attraction, qualities such as honesty, emotional maturity and the ability to resolve disagreements can become far more significant over time.
“Professional achievements can tell you something about a person’s ambitions, but very little about how they behave in a relationship,” says Birner. “The real question is whether two people can build a partnership in which both feel understood, respected and supported.”
The Importance of Privacy in Modern Dating
Privacy is another consideration, particularly for individuals who prefer to keep their personal lives separate from their professional identities.
Public dating profiles and photographs can make people identifiable to colleagues, clients or wider professional networks. For some, this is a reason to avoid conventional dating platforms altogether.
Private matchmaking offers an alternative, but discretion requires more than confidentiality. Clear boundaries, mutual consent and careful handling of personal information are equally important, particularly when approaching individuals who have not actively registered with a matchmaking service.
Rethinking the Future of Private Matchmaking
The changing expectations of women are creating an opportunity to reconsider how private matchmaking services operate.
For Birner, the future of matchmaking is not about reversing gender roles. It is about moving beyond them.
“Women shouldn’t have to wait to be chosen. They should have the freedom to decide what kind of relationship they want and take an active role in finding it.”
Ultimately, meaningful relationships are not determined by professional titles, financial circumstances or conventional expectations alone. They depend on whether two people understand each other’s priorities, respect their differences and share a vision of the future.
The question is no longer whether women should have a seat at the table in private matchmaking. It is why they were ever expected to wait for an invitation.
