More than 550 people and organisations have shared their views on plans to extend the DLR to Thamesmead and Beckton Riverside, with consultation responses showing continued strong support for the scheme.
Respondents highlighted the improved public transport links, regeneration opportunities and better access to jobs, education and services that the extension could provide for communities on both sides of the River Thames. The proposed extension would provide Thamesmead with its first rail connection and support the delivery of thousands of new homes and jobs in Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead, helping unlock some of London’s most important regeneration opportunities while improving connectivity across east and southeast London.
The latest consultation, which ran from 5 June to 16 July 2026, focused on how the proposed new stations at Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead could look, how customers would access them, and how the extension could be constructed while minimising impacts on local communities, businesses and the environment. TfL received 553 responses, including 527 from members of the public and 26 from stakeholder organisations.
Respondents expressed continued strong support for the extension and the wider benefits it could bring, including improved connectivity, economic growth, and regeneration. Many also highlighted the importance of fully accessible stations, safe walking and cycling routes, good bus connections and ensuring the scheme allows for potential future DLR extensions beyond Thamesmead.
The consultation also identified concerns around construction impacts, including traffic, noise and environmental effects. These issues will continue to be considered as the scheme develops.
Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, said:
“It’s great that we have reached the next milestone of this vital project, following the Government’s backing of our plans in last year’s budget. This scheme has the potential to transform travel in a part of the capital that has historically lacked the public transport connections it needs. It will unlock thousands of new homes and jobs, and boost economic growth across the capital and beyond, as we work to build a greener, fairer and more prosperous London for all.”
Alex Williams, TfL’s Chief Customer and Strategy Officer, said:
“Thank you to everyone who took part in our latest consultation on plans to extend the DLR to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead.
“The responses we received show continued strong support for the scheme and recognise the important role it could play in improving public transport connections, supporting new homes and jobs, and unlocking growth on both sides of the River Thames.
“We have carefully considered the feedback received and will use it to help develop the proposals further as we continue working towards submitting an application for permission to build and operate the scheme.”

James Asser, MP for West Ham and Beckton, said:
“I’m pleased to see the public back the significant impact the DLR extension will deliver for East London.
“It will bring investment, jobs, homes and better connectivity to our communities, and I look forward to seeing the project proceed at pace.”
Abena Oppong-Asare, MP for Erith and Thamesmead, said:
“It is encouraging to see strong support for bringing the DLR to Thamesmead, something I have campaigned for since I was first elected. Residents have waited far too long for the connections they deserve. This extension could make everyday journeys easier and open up access to jobs, education and new homes.
“Thank you to everyone who shared their views. I will keep working with TfL, the Mayor, Greenwich Council and our partners to deliver this vital link, ensuring local voices shape the plans and existing communities benefit.”
Mayor of Newham, Forhad Hussain, said:
“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who shared their views during the consultation.
“The responses show that local people care deeply about having good quality housing and transport infrastructure on their doorstep.
“Extending the DLR into Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead will mean more jobs, better public spaces and better access to other parts of London.
“I am looking forward to seeing proposals brought forward next year that take on board the views of local people and result in better homes, better connections and better prospects for thousands of people.”
Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said:
“A new DLR station would be a game changer for Thamesmead, giving residents better connection to jobs, education, and opportunities across London. Alongside this, it would unlock Thamesmead’s enormous potential, helping to deliver thousands of much-needed homes and supporting the growth of a thriving town centre and strong local economy.
“We are ambitious for Thamesmead’s future as a flourishing riverside neighbourhood and look forward to working with our partners to bring these plans to life.”
Feedback from the consultation will now be used to refine the proposals ahead of a planned Transport and Works Act Order application in 2027. TfL will continue working with partners including the Mayor of London, the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the London Borough of Newham, Homes England and other key stakeholders as the scheme progresses.
