September marks the start of back-to-school routines, but for savvy households, it’s also the perfect moment to take control of bills. With energy prices creeping up as winter approaches and autumn marking the peak of policy renewals, a little planning now can make a big difference to your finances in the months ahead.
James Ward, founder and CEO of CompareYourBusinessCosts.co.uk, explains why September is the ideal month to act.
“Right now is the sweet spot to review your bills before the winter spike and Christmas spending hits. Energy costs rise as usage increases, insurance policies auto-renew, and many people unknowingly pay a loyalty penalty simply by sticking with the same providers. Spending just a few hours reviewing and switching can realistically save a household £600 to £1,200 a year, and that money can be put to better use before the festive season.”
Here are James’s top tips for cutting costs this September:
1. Review your energy tariff
With energy usage set to rise dramatically from October onwards, households on variable or default tariffs can see bills creep up. Reviewing your energy deal in September allows you to lock in a fixed tariff before the winter spike and avoid paying more than necessary. It also gives you time to explore new suppliers or green energy options that could save additional money.
Top tip: Gather your recent bills, check comparison sites, and switch to a better deal in 15–30 minutes online. Set a calendar reminder to review again before next autumn.
2. Tackle the loyalty penalty
Millions of UK households continue to pay more simply because they haven’t shopped around. Broadband, insurance, and energy providers often reward long-standing customers poorly, leaving thousands wasted every year. Acting in September gives you the chance to escape these penalties before automatic renewals hit.
Top tip: Make a list of all monthly services and subscriptions, compare current costs with competitors, and switch if you can save. Even small monthly savings add up over a year.
3. Shop around for insurance
Car, home, and pet insurance policies often renew in Q3 and Q4. Auto-renewal usually means missing out on savings of £80–£115 per policy. Reviewing policies in September ensures you can lock in better rates before renewal deadlines and avoid last-minute stress.
Top tip: Check if you can combine multiple policies with one provider for bundled discounts, and don’t assume loyalty guarantees a better deal.
4. Beat the energy price cap change
Ofgem adjusts the Energy Price Cap quarterly, with the next shift in October. Securing a deal in September means you can avoid surprise increases and budget more effectively for the colder months ahead.
Top tip: If your current provider is on a default tariff, switch now. Even a few pounds saved per month can prevent hundreds of pounds wasted over winter.
5. Remember, switching is quick
Many people overestimate the time and hassle involved in switching providers. Which? reports that energy, broadband, or insurance switches can be completed in just 15–30 minutes online.
Top tip: Set aside a single morning or evening to review all major household bills at once, so you can make multiple switches in one sitting.
