Animating healing: The visual world of Chenyi Zhu

In the contemporary creative industry, few professionals can seamlessly integrate the profound sensibility of independent animation with the precise logic of commercial design quite like Chenyi Zhu. As a New York-based visual artist and animator, Chenyi has earned international acclaim for her work and is renowned for her unique “healing” aesthetic. Her pieces have not only graced the screens of Oscar-qualifying film festivals but have also been shortlisted for the UK’s prestigious World Illustration Awards (WIA) and the London International Creative Competition (LICC).

The Healing Power of Hand-Drawn Emotion

For Chenyi, gaining recognition from top UK creative institutions is an affirmation of her profound personal aesthetic philosophy. She views her craft as a medium—a bridge connecting deep emotions—rather than merely a technical skill. “For me, the texture of hand-drawn art carries an irreplaceable power and emotion,” Chenyi explains. Whether creating on traditional paper or utilizing digital media, she insists on preserving lines that are full of vitality and breath. She firmly believes that imperfect marks are natural entry points for human emotional resonance, thereby creating a visual language that transcends national borders and possesses a “healing” power.

Competitive Recognition on the Global Stage

Chenyi’s recent work, Night Market, is currently touring major international film festivals. The film has garnered numerous accolades, including selections in highly competitive juried categories at the Oscar-qualifying Chilemonos International Animation Festival in Chile, the internationally juried Fest Anča in Slovakia, and the Zlín Film Festival in the Czech Republic, in addition to being shortlisted for the WIA. Emerging from thousands of global entries and undergoing rigorous peer review, this groundbreaking work utilizes visual language and emotional warmth to bring healing power to the vulnerable.

Chenyi’s work has further solidified her standing in the UK’s creative community, as she was recently named an Official Selection at the London International Creative Competition (LICC). The brand animation she created for PinPaint stood out through a fiercely competitive juried process, highlighting her ability to translate avant-garde artistic concepts into highly influential commercial narratives.

PinPaint: Bridging Art and Commerce

Currently, Chenyi applies her professional talents to multiple creative projects, most notably as the Founding Designer of PinPaint. PinPaint is an innovative creative brand dedicated to designing narrative-driven lifestyle products, including the highly acclaimed “Story Bag” and story pins. Chenyi is deeply involved in the full-cycle planning and execution of the brand’s core projects, covering everything from brand building to product design.

With Chenyi’s involvement, PinPaint has evolved into a thriving creative ecosystem dedicated to bridging the gap between independent artists and the commercial market. An open call event last year received an astounding response, with over 400 independent artists applying to participate, which strongly proves the influence of this ecosystem. Such an overwhelming response highlights Chenyi’s remarkable effectiveness in empowering creators; her work with PinPaint provides these artists with crucial market exposure and professional monetization channels.

Future Horizons: Deepening Narratives and Expanding Communities

Looking ahead, Chenyi’s professional plans focus primarily on two areas: deepening her personal narrative and expanding the creative community. On a personal level, she is committed to upholding a visual language characterized by “hand-drawn texture” and “emotional warmth,” exploring the integration of visual arts and psychological intervention to create works that leave audiences feeling “warm inside.”

On an industry level, Chenyi will continue to utilize platforms like PinPaint to encourage and support her peers. She is well aware of the challenges artists face when crossing the commercial divide and is therefore determined to invest her energy into projects that provide exposure and expand monetization channels for other creators. Through her dual identity as a visionary artist and a commercial designer, Chenyi is building a lasting bridge that connects creators and consumers, ensuring that visual art becomes a tangible source of strength and comfort in daily life.
