Carrickfergus aerospace manufacturer plans £1.7m expansion and 16 jobs

Carrickfergus aerospace manufacturer plans £1.7m expansion and 16 jobs

IPC Mouldings has announced a £1.7 million programme to expand its Carrickfergus operation, with plans to create 16 jobs as it increases capacity for the aircraft interiors market.

The project, announced on 22 October, brings together new production equipment, software and artificial intelligence systems, factory improvements and recruitment. Invest NI has offered £112,000 towards the planned roles. IPC Mouldings says the expansion is intended to support its growth in international markets rather than reporting jobs already filled or output already delivered.

Investment focused on production capacity

IPC Mouldings designs and manufactures tooling, plastic injection-moulded parts and value-added assemblies for aircraft interiors. The company has operated for more than three decades and is based in Carrickfergus, County Antrim.

Its investment programme is intended to add equipment and upgrade the factory alongside digital systems. The company says those changes should raise productivity and give it more capacity to meet demand from aerospace customers outside the UK. That is a stated expectation for the project, not a completed increase in production or sales.

Software and artificial intelligence systems form part of the announced package, alongside physical investment in the site. The announcement does not set out a delivery timetable for individual upgrades or specify which production processes will use the systems. It therefore establishes the scope of the planned programme, rather than confirming that every element is already in service.

Recruitment plan would lift workforce to 50

The 16 proposed posts span engineering, technical and production work. If the recruitment plan is completed, the company expects its workforce to reach 50 people. No names, appointment dates or detailed job descriptions have been announced, so the figures should be understood as a hiring plan.

The funding offer from Invest NI is directed at the creation of the roles. It is separate from the company’s £1.7 million investment figure and should not be treated as an additional £1.7 million of public money. The announcement presents the support as part of a wider programme intended to strengthen skills and manufacturing capability at the Carrickfergus site.

IPC Mouldings has previously received help connected with leadership development, international trade, operational improvement, lean manufacturing and supply-chain work. The new plan builds on that earlier support but is a distinct investment and recruitment proposal announced this week.

The company also holds SC21 Gold status, an aerospace and defence supply-chain standard. That status is separate from the new investment, but it provides context for the firm’s existing role in a sector where manufacturers must meet demanding quality and delivery requirements.

Export growth remains a target

The company expects the programme to generate an additional £3 million in export sales over the next four years. Its established overseas customer base includes businesses in the United States and Asia. The export figure is a forecast, not revenue already secured, and will depend on demand, production capacity and the company winning work in those markets.

For the local economy, the immediate development is the announcement of investment, support and planned recruitment at an established advanced-manufacturing business. The longer-term outcome will depend on delivery of the factory upgrades, recruitment and the company’s ability to convert its additional capacity into orders from aerospace customers.
