London schools bid for share of £10k refurb fund

Cash-strapped schools across London are being given the chance to make lasting improvements to their facilities by winning a share of a £10,000 prize fund.

Leading decorating and DIY specialist Leyland has re-launched its popular Big School Makeover initiative, which will see three schools in the capital win thousands of pounds worth of paint, tools and building materials to revamp the environment for their pupils.

One winning school will receive £5,000 to spend at any of Leyland’s 35 stores across the capital, while two runners-up will secure £2,500 worth of materials each.

Anyone can nominate any school within London for the prize, regardless of age group, between September 3 and September 30.

Ten finalists will then be selected and the three winners decided by public vote.

Martin Hastings, CEO of Leyland, said: “We’re proud to launch our premier community initiative for a third consecutive year, helping to make tangible improvements to three schools in London.

Big School Makeover always captures the imagination, with parents, grandparents, carers, teachers and local residents keen to put their chosen school in the mix for the top prize. In previous years, we have seen more than 500 nominations and 10,000 votes, which demonstrates the passion people feel for schools.

Everyone knows budgets are tight at all schools so winning materials through Big School Makeover can make a tremendous difference.

Leyland has been in prominent London locations for 40 years. We are proud to call the capital our home and we’re passionate about helping the communities around our stores.”

Previous winners have been Latchmere School and Malden Manor Primary School, both in Kingston.

Latchmere was able to revamp classrooms and corridors, while Malden Manor refurbished its sports hall.

Bachar Aleddin, Business Manager at Malden Manor Primary School, said: “We were absolutely over the moon to win this fantastic competition.

Our sports hall was worn out with faded walls and a dull environment that lacked the inspiration and energy pupils need to fully engage in physical activities.

We used these materials to upgrade the space and create uplifting walls that reflect the school’s spirit and values.

“It is fantastic that Leyland is committed to supporting good causes around London at a time when budgets are so tight.”

Carolyn Coles, Head of School at Latchmere School, said: “It was absolutely amazing to win this competition. All of our parents and teachers were very engaged with the campaign and we’re grateful for their support.

The school looks so much more pleasant and inviting with a good coat of paint. This was game-changing for us and we are extremely grateful to Leyland for the opportunity.”

The winning schools will be able to select any products from Leyland’s extensive range, including paint, tools, timber and plumbing parts, all from leading brands.

Entries can be made by visiting www.leylandsdm.co.uk/bigschoolmakeover and submitting 100 words explaining how the funding would help.

Leyland stores stock a comprehensive range of products, including paint and decorating essentials, tools, hardware, electrical and plumbing equipment and building materials.
