London’s startup scene is alive with energy and innovation, and one founder story that captures its spirit is that of Muj Choudhury, CEO and Founder of RocketPhone.ai. His journey from a determined teenager to a leader in AI-driven enterprise solutions embodies the ambition, resilience, and creativity that drive the city’s new generation of entrepreneurs.

Muj has recalled that his journey began long before he became a recognised leader in AI-driven enterprise solutions. At the age of eleven, he says he started working in a garden nursery, digging holes for £1 an hour. Though difficult, he has said the experience taught him the value of hard work and self-reliance from a young age. By sixteen, he reportedly sought more meaningful experience and found a role with one of the largest computer resellers in the country.
He worked there for free to gain exposure to coding and software development, while also holding late-night shifts at Indian restaurants. Between Monday and Friday, he says he programmed and built applications, and by the weekend, he washed dishes and served customers until the early hours. This combination of technical curiosity and relentless work ethic shaped his approach to life and business.
Early entrepreneurial ventures
Muj has described how, during his university years studying computing, he founded Student Computer Services Ltd., a small company that sold PCs to fellow students. He reportedly designed the branding and marketing himself, arranged assembly and shipping through local suppliers, and developed an early version of what would later be called ‘dropshipping’. These experiences demonstrated his ability to identify opportunities, mobilise resources, and create value in ways that would later define his career.
After graduation, Muj joined IBM Research in Silicon Valley, where he worked on Parallel Sysplex, a complex system used by large organisations for banking and other applications. This role exposed him to early forms of big data processing and laid the foundation for his later work in artificial intelligence.
Subsequent roles at Oracle and Salesforce added enterprise experience and leadership skills, highlighting the contrast between managing teams in large organisations and building a purpose-driven culture in startups. At RocketPhone.ai, he applies these lessons by focusing on people’s motivations and creating an environment free from unnecessary politics.
The inspiration behind RocketPhone.ai
RocketPhone.ai was born from Muj’s observation that voice communication, despite being a central business channel, had remained largely unchanged for decades.
“I noticed that while many technological fields were evolving rapidly, voice systems were still stuck in outdated models,” he explained.
By harnessing declining computing costs and advances in AI, Muj brought together a team of seasoned experts across sales, engineering, telephony, and AI to build a platform that analyses every conversation within a business and generates actionable insights in real time. Unlike traditional approaches to CRM management that rely on manual input, RocketPhone transforms conversations into decisions and actions, helping business teams such as sales, support, and marketing work more efficiently and recover millions in previously lost sales opportunities.
Overcoming early challenges
Muj has said that the early days of RocketPhone.ai were not without challenges. Leaving a secure role at Salesforce was a major personal risk, particularly with a family to support. Building a team capable of tackling AI without the ability to offer competitive salaries required persuading talent to join a startup on vision and purpose alone.
He reportedly connected with universities and leveraged academic credibility to attract skilled graduates, while securing Prudential as the first client, which helped demonstrate the platform’s value. He also raised £50,000 in early funding from trusted contacts. This approach enabled RocketPhone.ai to later raise $10 million without relying on venture capital, maintaining control over its direction while establishing a sustainable business model.
Muj has said that setbacks are part and parcel of the entrepreneurial experience. When an early product launch encountered serious issues, it delayed the company by nearly a year, but ultimately strengthened the platform and taught the team to build more resilient systems.
“Real failure only happens when you stop trying,” he has said. “Every setback is an opportunity to learn and improve.”
Insights for London’s startup ecosystem
For founders navigating London’s startup ecosystem, Muj stresses the importance of experimentation, calculated risk-taking, and understanding the motivations of the people around you. He has highlighted that accelerators, co-working spaces, and mentorship networks provide support, but believes the strength of a startup comes from a team that shares purpose, embraces challenges, and works collaboratively.
He has also emphasised the importance of focusing on product-market fit early, maintaining a culture of honesty and professionalism, and making practical decisions, such as investing in highly skilled people rather than cutting costs at the expense of quality.
Looking ahead
Looking to the future, Muj envisions RocketPhone.ai as the intelligence layer for enterprise voice interactions, turning daily conversations into actionable insights and helping businesses identify overlooked opportunities while improving performance and decision-making. His story, as he has described it, from a young teenager juggling multiple jobs to a founder leading an AI-driven enterprise, illustrates the qualities that define London’s next generation of entrepreneurs: resilience, creativity, and the courage to take risks.
Muj Choudhury’s journey demonstrates that innovation is not just about technology but about people, culture, and relentless problem-solving. It is a story that inspires aspiring founders across London to pursue bold ideas and embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with building something meaningful in one of the world’s most dynamic startup ecosystems.
