Rising star wins breakthrough award with the backing of world famous MetFilm School.
In a night of glittering accolades and cinematic breakthroughs, the 45th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards lit up London’s Mayfair as the cream of the film world gathered to celebrate creativity and innovation.
A highlight of the evening was the Philip French Breakthrough British/Irish Filmmaker award, sponsored once again by MetFilm School.
The accolade went to rising star Mikey Madison for her riveting performance in Anora, the story of a young sex worker from Brooklyn who meets and impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
MetFilm School is a committed supporter of emerging talent, and continues its tradition of backing bold new voices in the industry.
“As a film school with some 18,000 students and graduates across six campuses in the UK, Ireland and Germany, we are proud to support the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards,” said Jonny, director of MetFilm School.
In recent years, the school has grown significantly, expanding with new campuses in Leeds, Brighton, Bristol, Birmingham, and Manchester, further strengthening its commitment to nurturing creative talent.
“The reason we sponsor the Philip French Breakthrough British/Irish Filmmaker award is because these stories, these successes inspire our students and graduates. These journeys in film and television provide role models, benchmarks, and reference points to help them plot out their next steps. The nominees for this award are already inspiring. Congratulations to Mikey and all the nominees.”
Mikey Madison’s victory marks a significant milestone for her career and for MetFilm School’s ongoing commitment to nurturing fresh talent. Her performance in Anora has captivated audiences and critics, and her win stands alongside the achievements of past sponsorship successes: Mia McKenna-Bruce’s win in 2024 for How to Have Sex and Charlotte Wells’ win in 2023 for the Oscar and BAFTA-nominated Aftersun.
The awards night, which has already sparked extensive media coverage, was a showcase of the industry’s evolving landscape. It was a night where legacy and innovation came together, where well-known actors like Daniel Craig, honoured with the prestigious Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film, mingled with fresh new talent.
Critics and industry insiders praised the blend of time-honoured craftsmanship and fresh perspectives, with social media abuzz over the event.
Zoe Saldana’s moving acceptance speech, calling for a broader understanding of redemption, underscored the awards’ theme of resilience in the face of creative challenges.
Mikey Madison’s triumph in the Breakthrough Performer category captured the spirit of the night: a celebration of artistry with the promise of new voices in film.
As the UK’s film industry continues to grow and evolve, events like these remind us that the future of cinema is in capable and inspiring hands, with institutions like MetFilm School supporting its progression.
