Six, including pilot, killed in helicopter crash near Joshimath in Uttarakhand

Six people, including a pilot and five passengers, died when a Trans Bharat Aviation helicopter crashed near Chai village in Uttarakhand on 30 October 2026. The aircraft was flying from Badrinath towards Sahastradhara in Dehradun.

The crash occurred in the Joshimath/Jyotirmath area of Chamoli district. Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar said all six people died at the scene. An Army team confirmed the fatalities.

The operator was Trans Bharat Aviation Pvt. Ltd., and the helicopter’s call sign was identified as VT-HCX. The route, operator and aircraft identification were established details of the accident, while its cause remained under investigation.

Kumar’s account confirmed both the number of deaths and where they occurred. The six fatalities comprised the pilot and five passengers. The fatalities were also confirmed by an Army team.

Joint emergency response

Pushkar Singh Dhami posted about the crash on his verified official X account on 30 October. He said reports had been received of a helicopter crash near Chai village, referring to the surrounding area as Josirmath in his message.

Dhami said the district administration, the Disaster Management Department and SDRF were conducting a joint rescue operation. His update described the emergency response to the reported crash, with those three bodies working together.

The location given in the official post was near Chai village. The accident was reported in the Joshimath/Jyotirmath area of Chamoli district, on a flight heading from Badrinath towards Sahastradhara in Dehradun.

The official accounts addressed different aspects of the incident. Dhami described reports of the crash and the joint rescue operation, while Kumar confirmed that six people had died at the scene. An Army team also confirmed the fatalities.

The rescue operation described in Dhami’s post and the confirmation of fatalities are distinct from the investigation into the accident. Neither the emergency response nor the confirmation of deaths establishes the circumstances that caused the helicopter to crash.

Cause remains under investigation

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau was reported to be investigating the accident. The cause remained unresolved, and no explanation for why the helicopter came down had been established in the information available about the crash.

The reported investigation concerns an accident for which the operator, route and location have been identified. Those details establish the flight involved and where it crashed, but they do not provide a finding about the cause.

The identification of VT-HCX as the helicopter’s call sign is an aircraft detail, not an explanation of the accident. Similarly, the identification of Trans Bharat Aviation Pvt. Ltd. as the operator does not, on its own, establish what happened during the flight.

The journey towards Sahastradhara in Dehradun provides the route information. The crash location was near Chai village in Chamoli district. The fact that the aircraft came down there does not resolve the separate question of why it crashed.

Any determination of the circumstances remains a matter for the investigation. The bureau’s reported involvement should not be treated as a completed finding, and the confirmed death toll does not indicate that the cause has been established.

The confirmed human toll remains six deaths: the pilot and five passengers. Kumar said all six died at the scene. An Army team also confirmed the fatalities, while the cause of the accident remained under investigation.
