London is home to some of the world’s most celebrated luxury hotels. Properties such as The Savoy, Claridge’s, and The Ritz London have earned international reputations by delivering exceptional service year after year. The same commitment to excellence can be found in other renowned destinations around the world, where memorable guest experiences matter just as much as impressive architecture.
One of those destinations is Las Ventanas al Paraíso, the luxury resort developed by Javier Burillo Azcárraga. Recognised by Condé Nast Traveler as the world’s number one boutique resort for three consecutive years, it earned international acclaim for its exceptional guest experience and uncompromising service.
While Javier built his career outside the UK, the leadership principles behind that success are universal. Whether managing a luxury hotel in London or a boutique resort in Mexico, long-term success is built on consistency, attention to detail, and putting people first.
His journey is also unusual because it never followed the path many expected. Born into one of the world’s most influential media families, Javier chose not to enter television or broadcasting. Instead, he set out to build a career of his own, beginning at the very bottom of the hospitality industry before creating businesses that earned international recognition.
Why Javier Burillo Azcárraga started at the bottom
For Javier, independence was never just an ambition. It was the foundation of every decision he made throughout his career.
“I wanted all my life to be independent,” he says. “I never worked in TV or radio with my family.”
Rather than stepping into an executive position, he joined The Ritz in Acapulco and learned the business from the ground up.
“I started learning to wash dishes at The Ritz,” he recalls.
Over the next eight years, he worked across multiple departments before eventually becoming General Manager. That experience gave him a practical understanding of hospitality that could never have been learned from behind a desk. He came to appreciate how every employee contributes to the guest experience, from the kitchen and housekeeping to the front desk and management. Those lessons became the foundation of the leadership style he carried into every business that followed.
Building businesses through service, not status
After leaving The Ritz, Javier turned his attention to entrepreneurship, opening several restaurants in Mexico. Two became particularly well known: Casa de Campo in Cuernavaca and another in Mexico City, both recognised among the country’s leading dining destinations at the time.
Although each business was different, his philosophy remained remarkably consistent. He believed guests returned because they trusted the experience, not because of advertising or trends. Delivering reliable service, paying attention to detail, and building genuine relationships mattered far more than chasing recognition.
Those principles would become even more important when he took on the most ambitious project of his career.
Creating one of the world’s top boutique resorts
In 1997, Javier developed Las Ventanas al Paraíso from the ground up, with a vision of creating something that stood apart in the luxury hospitality industry.
“Las Ventanas al Paraíso was probably my most dear accomplishment,” he says.
Rather than simply creating another luxury resort, Javier set out to build a destination where personalised service was as important as the property itself. Every detail was designed to make guests feel valued, from the quality of the accommodations to the way they were welcomed and cared for throughout their stay. That commitment to the guest experience helped Las Ventanas al Paraíso earn recognition from Condé Nast Traveler as the world’s number one boutique resort for three consecutive years.
For Javier, however, the awards were never the goal.
“They were a reflection of the people behind the experience,” he says. “When everyone shares the same commitment to serving others, recognition often follows naturally.”
Leadership beyond hospitality
After selling Las Ventanas al Paraíso, Javier expanded into another luxury sector by acquiring a 30 percent ownership stake in Camper & Nicholsons, one of the world’s most prestigious yacht companies. While the industry was different, he found that the fundamentals of leadership remained the same.
Customers value honesty. Teams perform best when they feel respected. Long-term relationships are built through consistency rather than promises. Those ideas shaped every business decision he made, regardless of the industry.
Javier also credits his grandfather, Emilio Azcárraga, with influencing his outlook on leadership.
“My grandfather always remained a simple, wonderful human being,” he says. “‘All for the people’ was his slogan.”
That lesson stayed with him throughout his career and reinforced his belief that great businesses are built by serving people first.
Building a legacy that gives back
Today, Javier’s focus has shifted from luxury hospitality to philanthropy. He is the Founder and Chairman of Grant’s Crusade, a nonprofit organisation created in honour of his son, Grant, to support neurodiverse children and their families.
“Now I have a non-profit for neurodiverse children in honour of my son Grant,” he says.
Although his work looks very different today, the values that guided his business career remain unchanged. “I always wanted to be honest, simple and well balanced.”
Looking back, Javier Burillo Azcárraga’s story is about much more than building successful businesses. It is about choosing independence, earning experience through hard work, and creating organisations that people trust. Whether those lessons are applied in London, Cabo San Lucas, or anywhere else in the world, they continue to demonstrate that exceptional leadership begins with humility, consistency, and a genuine commitment to serving others.
