Britons bring Christmas forward: Temu survey reveals why

Festive spirit comes in earlier than ever, a third of Brits putting out their decorations as early as November, consumer expert Kate Hardcastle told BBC citing findings from a survey supported by Temu.

Have you noticed that Christmas is arriving a bit earlier than before?

With dazzling lights and decorations strung across rooftops and trees in the neighbourhood, you are not the only one under such impression!

About 20% of Brits started their Christmas decoration earlier than ever before, consumer expert Kate Hardcastle told the BBC, citing an online survey supported by direct-from-factory marketplace Temu. A third of Brits started transforming their homes into festive wonderlands as early as November.

Amid rising living costs, visiting decorated houses has become an affordable and joyful activity for many families. The research reveals that 36% of parents make it an annual tradition, while 25% enjoy it as a free way to get their children excited for Christmas. Even those who don’t visit local houses enjoy festive displays in parks, city centres, or shopping centres, with 15% opting for these alternatives.

Apart from spreading festive joy to individuals, the lighting up idea also fosters a sense of community, noted Hardcastle, adding that people have more opportunities to chat with neighbours about decorations and even exchange shopping stories.

“About 60% of people felt that neighbourhoods were more welcome when they see these festive lights appear in the windows, around the doors, in the gardens,” she told the BBC.

“I’m really happy that we’ve got the validation of this research from Temu, who are helping to be on a mission to bring affordable Christmas decorations to us all,” she continued.

Temu: the go-to place in Festive Décor

Hardcastle recommended Temu as a reliable destination for affordable and quality Christmas decorations.

“Temu is such a good partner for this because it allows some affordability. It allows the idea that many of us can access those decoration pieces… So it’s very much an idea that everyone can be part of this. Everyone can shed a little light if they want to bring the joy,” She told Gateway radio in an interview.

Known as a one-stop platform for quality and affordable merchandise, Temu has become a top go-to place for Christmas décor, appliances, furniture, kitchen and homeware as well as other holiday essentials.

The marketplace has now become a favourite for UK consumers seeking budget-friendly options without compromising on style.  Some discovered an £8 snowy forest-themed curtain on Temu and turned her living room into a serene winter escape. Others found cute LED lanterns from Temu and added artificial foliage and pretty berries to create festive vibes.

Delivery on Temu can be as quick as one business day, as it now actively recruits local sellers and offers despatches from local warehouses.

UK households save up to £3,000 per year by shopping on direct-from-factory platforms like Temu, thanks to its operation efficiency, a recent study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) shows.

Kate’s Top Tips For Budget Friendly Christmas Home Design

Drawing from her experience, Kate shared practical advice for making holiday decorating both cost-effective and impactful:

  1. Get Creative with DIY Projects
Personalise your decorations by making them yourself. Simple crafts like paper snowflakes, hand-painted baubles, or wreaths made from natural materials add a unique and heartfelt touch. Many online platforms provide affordable crafting supplies and inspiration, making it easier than ever to create memorable DIY decorations while sticking to a budget.
  2. Look for Multi-Use and Timeless Items
Invest in versatile decorations that can be reused year after year, such as neutral wreaths, classic fairy lights, or multi-purpose LED displays. Look for online platforms that offer bundled items or timeless designs, providing excellent value for money while reducing waste.
  3. Focus on Key Areas
You don’t need to decorate every inch of your home to create a festive impact. Concentrate on high-visibility spots like your Christmas tree, mantelpiece, or front door. A statement wreath or a strategically placed string of lights can set the holiday mood without requiring a large budget. Online stores often feature curated inspiration and bundles to help you maximise your efforts in key areas.
  4. Take Advantage of LED and Sustainable Technology
Opt for energy-efficient LED lighting, and if possible, choose solar-powered options for outdoor displays. These cost less to run, are environmentally friendly, and allow you to go all out with your decorating plans while keeping your utility bills manageable.
  5. Plan Ahead and Budget Wisely
Avoid overspending by setting a clear budget for your decorations and sticking to it. Shop early to take advantage of festive deals or post-holiday clearance events to stock up for next year at a fraction of the cost. Online marketplaces often feature price comparisons and exclusive discounts, helping you plan your purchases smartly and efficiently.
