CCTV appeal follows report of sexual assault outside Vauxhall Underground

CCTV appeal follows report of sexual assault outside Vauxhall Underground

Detectives have released CCTV images as they investigate a reported sexual assault of a girl outside Vauxhall Underground station.

The appeal concerns an incident reported to have happened shortly after 8am on Sunday 30 August. Police said the girl was standing outside the station when a man approached her, spoke to her inappropriately and sexually assaulted her before walking away.

The newly released images are the material development in the investigation. Officers are asking the public to consider whether they recognise the man shown, as they believe he may have information that could assist their enquiries.

What the appeal does and does not say

The information made public places the reported incident outside the Underground station rather than on a train or platform. It gives an approximate time and date, but does not identify the girl or disclose further personal details about her. That restraint is important in a case involving a child.

Police have not named a suspect in the public appeal. Their request is to speak to the man pictured because he may be able to help the investigation. The release does not announce an arrest, a charge or any finding about responsibility for the reported offence. The fact that images have been issued should therefore not be treated as proof that the person shown committed a crime.

Nor does the appeal set out whether the girl and the man knew one another, what happened before the approach, or any wider circumstances around the report. Those matters have not been made public and should not be inferred from the images or from posts shared online.

A public request for information

Releasing CCTV images makes the appeal visible to people who may have been in the area or who may recognise the man from the image. It also gives anyone with relevant information a direct way to pass it to investigators. The reference for this enquiry is 223 of 30 August.

People who can help are asked to text 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40, quoting that reference. Information can also be passed on anonymously through a separate reporting route on 0800 555 111.

The appeal asks for information, not public identification campaigns. Anyone who believes they recognise the man should provide that information to the investigators rather than attempting to approach, confront or name somebody on social media. A report may be useful even if the person contacting police is unsure whether a detail is significant; investigators can assess it alongside CCTV and other evidence.

Safeguarding remains central

Cases involving alleged sexual offences against children require particular care. The available information does not disclose the girl’s identity, age, address, school, route or other personal details. Repeating or seeking such information would not assist the investigation and could cause further harm.

The reported location is one of London’s busiest transport interchanges, used by local residents, commuters and visitors. The public appeal is focused on a specific reported incident outside the station on the morning of 30 August, rather than on a broader claim about safety at the interchange or across the transport network.

For now, the investigation remains at the appeal stage. The significant public development is that detectives have made images available and set out how information can be provided. Any later announcement about an arrest, charge or other outcome would need to be assessed separately and described according to the facts then confirmed.
