Student accommodation is readily available, wherever you tend to go for university. Sure, some places might be a little thin on the ground but for the most part, you’re guaranteed some form of student accommodation in your first year, where the university is concerned.
It tends to be the case that after the first year though, you’ve got to figure out finding your own place elsewhere, which is where many might be navigating the rental market for the first time.
If that sounds like you, then it’s worth knowing some helpful tips on making sure you make the most out of your student accommodation search.
Know your budget
First and foremost, know your budget. As a student, chances are, you’ll be fairly limited on what you can afford. Some students manage just on their student financing, while others might need to get a job in order to fund their accommodation, as well as all the other living costs that come with being a student.
Understanding and knowing what budget you have available will ensure you see all of the right properties within your price range. The last thing you want is to find yourself in a position where you can’t afford the rental payments. This won’t be great for your studies if you have to find a new place to live mid-semester.
Consider location
What type of location are you looking for when it comes to student accommodation? For example, if you want to be close to the university, then you might be willing to spend a little more to be closer to the building itself.
For some student accommodation, Newcastle has some great properties available for its students and all in great locations. However, not all pockets of a city or town where the university is based will be a great spot. You really need to do your research to find the right type of accommodation that will ensure your safety and general happiness.
Security is important
Talking of safety, security is an important one. What type of security comes with the student accommodation you’re looking at? Does it have a porter? Does it have sturdy locks on the entry and exits to the property itself?
Basic security is a necessity and you shouldn’t be going with property owners or properties in general that are severely lacking security for you and your belongings. You may be a student but you deserve to feel safe and secure in your rented space.
Find people to share with
Who are you looking to rent with? This is an important one because unlike the first year of university where you’re with random people you don’t know, these next two years are an opportunity to live with people you know – and like!
Find people to share with that you like and know you’re going to be able to live with.
Be detailed when looking around properties
Finally, make sure you’re looking around the properties carefully. Take note of what you see and question anything that doesn’t look quite right.
Finding student property is important, so follow these tips to ensure you get the right property for your student funds.
