From redundancy to building a thriving nursery group: How Caroline Poopola is transforming the future of childcare

For Caroline Poopola, founder of Alpha Child Care, entrepreneurship was not something she initially planned — it was something she grew up witnessing.

Born in the UK with Nigerian heritage, Caroline spent part of her childhood in Nigeria, where she watched her mother build and run her own business.

“Looking back, I think that was where the seed was planted,” says Caroline. “At the time I didn’t recognise it as entrepreneurship. I was simply watching my mum work hard, create something and enjoy what she did.”

After returning to the UK, Caroline entered the corporate world. However, she quickly realised that traditional employment did not satisfy her desire for challenge, creativity and growth.

“I knew from a young age that I got bored easily. I wanted to do more, I wanted challenges, but I didn’t understand at the time that it was because I had an entrepreneurial mindset.”

After two decades working in insurance, Caroline found herself facing redundancy,  a moment that forced her to reconsider her next chapter.

“I had to ask myself, what am I going to do now? I knew I needed something that challenged me every day.”

That turning point led her into childcare, an industry she had not previously worked in but one that quickly revealed itself as a calling.

A Personal Experience Became a Business Mission

Caroline’s inspiration for Alpha Child Care came not only from her professional journey, but from her own experiences as a parent.

Before starting her nursery business, Caroline experienced first-hand the challenges many parents face when searching for childcare that truly meets their needs.

“I remember walking into a nursery my daughter attended and thinking, if I ever start a nursery, I want it to feel different.”

From the environment to the communication with parents, Caroline wanted to create a space where families immediately felt confidence and trust.

“You never have a second chance to make a first impression. I wanted parents to walk through our doors and immediately feel that their child was safe, happy and valued.”

She also wanted to address the emotional challenges many parents experience when leaving their children in someone else’s care.

“As a parent, I remember feeling guilty when I dropped my daughter off. I wanted to create a place where parents felt reassured and where they could see their children were happy, learning and thriving.”

This became one of the foundations of Alpha Child Care,  building trust through transparency, communication and genuine care.

Changing the Narrative Around Childcare

From Redundancy to Building a Thriving Nursery Group: How Caroline Poopola is Transforming the Future of Childcare

When Caroline entered the childcare sector, she saw an opportunity to challenge perceptions.

“I wanted to change the narrative around childcare and help people understand the importance of what practitioners do.”

For Caroline, childcare is not simply a service, it is a responsibility.

“You are trusted with someone’s most precious possession: their child. That is a huge responsibility.”

Through Alpha Child Care, Caroline has focused on creating strong systems, processes and standards that deliver consistent quality while respecting the professionals who work in the sector.

From Operator to CEO: Learning to Scale

As Alpha grew, Caroline recognised that the role of a founder must evolve.

“One of the biggest lessons as an entrepreneur is understanding when you need to stop working in the business and start working on the business.”

After expanding to multiple branches, Caroline realised she could no longer be involved in every operational decision.

“I had to understand my value and focus on what I do best — bringing opportunities into the business, negotiating and looking at the bigger picture.”

Building the right team became essential.

“I used to think nobody could do things like me. But I learned that actually, many people are better than me in certain areas. My job is to build a team that can succeed together.”

Overcoming the Mindset Battles of Entrepreneurship

Like many founders, Caroline’s biggest challenges were not always external — they were internal.

She reflects on battling self-doubt, fear of failure and limiting beliefs.

“At the beginning, I questioned whether I was good enough. I questioned whether I deserved the opportunity.”

But Caroline learned that mindset is one of the most powerful tools an entrepreneur has.

“The same energy you use to put yourself down is the same energy you need to lift yourself up.”

Today, she credits emotional intelligence, strong leadership and the ability to build relationships as key factors in her success.

The Future of Alpha Child Care

What started as one opportunity has grown into a scalable childcare organisation with more than 10 nurseries built on strong values, systems and a commitment to excellence.

Caroline believes the future of successful childcare businesses comes down to three things:

  • Create an environment where children feel safe, secure and inspired to learn.
  • Build the right team and culture.

“Culture reflects the owner. A positive culture creates a positive team.”

  • Understand your numbers.

“Numbers can make or break a business. You need to understand your seasons, your finances and your opportunities.”

For aspiring childcare entrepreneurs, Caroline’s advice is simple:

“Build strong relationships, understand your numbers, create a great culture and always focus on the children thriving.”

Because for Caroline Poopola, Alpha Child Care is not just a business.

It is a mission to redefine childcare.
