Inspiration comes in many different forms. Elon Musk started building a tech empire due to his love for physics after being inspired by Richard Feynman’s books. Oprah Winfrey had Maya Angelou as one of her most significant influences in her life. Michael Jackson became a superstar thanks to the support of his father. While inspiration may come from many things, it is clear that having at least one inspiration keeps people motivated to pursue their dreams and overcome their limits in life.
For Dr. Gregory Crichlow, one of the Caribbean’s top aesthetic plastic surgeons, the film entitled “Why Me?” ultimately became his inspiration to pursue a career in plastic surgery. “Why Me?” is a 1984 film based on the real-life story of Air Force nurse Leola Mae Harmon whose face was shattered in a car accident. James Stallings saved Harmon’s life in so many ways. As a plastic surgeon, Stallings was her advocate and believed that she would make a full recovery. At the end of the movie, it was revealed that Harmon got her life back thanks to plastic surgery and was later married to Dr. Stallings.

Dr. Crichlow
Dr. Crichlow said that the film illuminated the power of plastic surgery to fix people’s faces and restore and renew their confidence, hope, and lives. The real-life story of Leola Harmon motivated Dr. Crichlow as he finished his Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery at the University of the West Indies in 1996. He took the lessons he learned from the film as he ventured to continue his mastery of cosmetic surgery, ultimately achieving multiple degrees and certifications in the process.
It has also inspired him to start his practice at Barbados along with a dedicated team to deliver the same excellent results as Dr. Stallings did. At the core of AvantBlue, his practice, it is all about building a lasting relationship with patients as they prioritise safety, quality of service, and excellence above all else. That’s why Dr. Crichlow and his company continue to be a household name for cosmetic surgery in Barbados and the entire Caribbean region. In fact, because of their high-quality services, AvantBlue has placed Barbados on the map as one of the best medical tourist destinations globally, along with the likes of Singapore, Canada, and the UK.
However, Dr. Crichlow’s story also proves that inspiration without action will remain just a dream. The surgeon’s inspiration served as fuel for him to seek excellence in his studies and the field. While Harmon’s story helped motivate him to become a plastic surgeon, Dr. Crichlow’s drive and ambition pushed him to become one of the best aesthetic plastic surgeons in the industry and for several years has also contributed back to the profession by serving on the faculty of multiple aesthetic and plastic surgery organisations, engaging in research writing articles, teaching and providing workshops to surgeons who desire to learn his techniques.
This is a crucial lesson for anyone who wants to start a career in cosmetic surgery or any other field of interest.
