Planning a 2027 holiday? Berlin beats Ibiza as Europe’s best culture and nightlife destination

Berlin has been named Europe’s best destination for combining culture and nightlife, while party capital Ibiza failed to make the top five.

If you’re already planning your 2027 holidays and want somewhere offering more than just beaches or sightseeing, new research has revealed the European destinations offering the best of both worlds.

Berlin took the top spot, beating Barcelona, Budapest and Lisbon, while Ibiza came in a surprising seventh place.

Travel experts at eShores analysed destinations across Europe, comparing museums and cultural attractions with bars and clubs to find the best places for sightseeing by day and going out after dark.

Europe’s top 10 for culture and nightlife

Rank Destination Overall score
1 Berlin 621
2 Barcelona 593
3 Budapest 290
4 Lisbon 284
5 Athens 250
6 Kraków 207
7 Ibiza 138
8 Valencia 129
9 Porto 112
10 Split 52

Berlin takes the crown

Berlin scored 621 overall thanks to its combination of museums, history and one of Europe’s most famous nightlife scenes.

For a 2027 city break, travellers can spend the day exploring Museum Island, seeing the remnants of the Berlin Wall and discovering the city’s history before heading out to its bars and clubs.

Barcelona wasn’t far behind, scoring 593 and actually recording the highest nightlife score in the study.

With Gaudí architecture, museums, beaches, restaurants and nightlife, the Spanish city remains a strong option for travellers who want plenty to do without having to choose between a cultural break and a party destination.

Ibiza misses the top five

Perhaps the biggest surprise was Ibiza finishing seventh.

The Balearic island might be synonymous with superclubs and world-famous DJs, but several cities performed better when nightlife was considered alongside culture.

Ibiza still offers far more than partying, including historic sites and UNESCO-listed attractions, but Berlin, Barcelona, Budapest, Lisbon, Athens and even Kraków all finished ahead of it.

Spain nevertheless dominated the top 10, with three destinations – Barcelona, Ibiza and Valencia – making the ranking.

Portugal also performed strongly, with Lisbon fourth and Porto ninth.

Meanwhile, Kraków was one of the less obvious destinations to outperform Ibiza, taking sixth place thanks to its mix of history, cultural attractions and lively bar scene.

Split in Croatia completed the top 10.

Gavin Lapidus, Company Director at eShores, said:

“Many travellers assume they need to choose between a cultural city break and a nightlife destination. What’s interesting is that some of Europe’s best-performing locations offer both.

“Berlin’s result shows travellers are increasingly drawn to destinations where they can spend the day exploring museums and historic sites before enjoying a thriving evening scene.”

So, if you’re starting to map out your 2027 holidays, the research suggests it might be worth looking beyond Europe’s traditional beach and party destinations.
