Sergiu Chiriac, 32, has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment after a jury at Inner London Crown Court convicted him of 12 offences involving a woman in her twenties and her two-year-old child. The sentence was imposed on Friday 2 October, following the verdict delivered at the same court on 4 February.
Verdict followed by 20-year prison term
The convictions cover three counts of rape, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, coercive and controlling behaviour, strangulation, child cruelty, witness intimidation, assault on a child and criminal damage. The offences concerned a series of incidents between 2021 and 2025.
The verdict was therefore not confined to one type of offending. It included sexual offences, physical assaults, abusive and controlling conduct, an offence concerning the child, intimidation and criminal damage. The jury’s findings established the offences for which Chiriac could be sentenced; the earlier reports and charges were allegations at the time they were made.
Chiriac was also ordered to serve four years on licence after the custodial part of the sentence. The court outcome means the case has moved from the jury’s findings in February to a substantial sentence eight months later.
Investigation began after a relative raised alarm
The investigation began on 31 March 2025, when a relative contacted officers after the woman arrived at their home with visible injuries. The relative was concerned for both her and the child’s safety. Officers subsequently went to Chiriac’s address, where they reported signs of a disturbance.
Police initially arrested him on allegations including actual bodily harm, criminal damage and assault on a child. He was charged and remanded in custody. The investigation then continued beyond that initial incident as detectives sought to establish the wider circumstances of the case.
Further allegations were investigated
In the weeks after the arrest, the woman was able to give a fuller account to detectives while receiving specialist support. That led to the investigation of further alleged incidents, including rape. On 11 September 2025, Chiriac was charged with multiple counts of rape, coercive and controlling behaviour, child cruelty and witness intimidation.
Those allegations were subsequently tested before a jury. The later verdict established criminal liability for the 12 offences listed by the court process; it is important to distinguish those convictions from the allegations that prompted the earlier stages of the investigation.
A case centred on safeguarding
The woman and child have not been named. The case involved safeguarding concerns from the point at which the relative sought help, and the child’s age was part of the circumstances considered during the investigation. No further identifying details about either victim have been made public.
The sentence brings the criminal proceedings reported in this case to a conclusion at the trial court. It also records a licence period in addition to the prison term, while the precise conditions of that licence have not been set out publicly. The conviction and sentence are separate from the support and recovery needs of the victims, which remain private.
What is confirmed
The confirmed outcome is that Chiriac was found guilty by a jury on 4 February and sentenced on 2 October at Inner London Crown Court. The court imposed 20 years’ imprisonment and a four-year period on licence. The underlying offending was reported as having taken place over several years, from 2021 to 2025, against a woman in her twenties and her young child.
