Sparkling, well-cared-for windows can instantly uplift the whole look of your home, bringing in plenty of natural light and a sense of openness. To help you keep your windows looking as good as new all year round, the experts from RW4Y share their essential cleaning and repairing tips.
Cheap and easy cleaning hacks
Making window cleaning part of your regular housekeeping routine can help keep them clear and shining. So, try to clean your windows inside and outside at least once every two weeks. You don’t need to shell out on expensive cleaners or equipment either. In fact, you can make your own window cleaning solution by combining one part vinegar with one part warm water in a spray bottle. If you’re tackling particularly tricky areas, you can also add a drop of washing-up liquid which will cut through dirt and grease. Once clean, be sure to wipe your windows dry with a clean microfibre cloth for a streak-free shine. For best results, swipe in horizontal or vertical motions instead of circles, to prevent streaks.
Keeping windows free of condensation
Windows are a prime spot for condensation to gather, whether from warm indoor air hitting the cold glass or a build-up of steam in kitchens and bathrooms. If left, these damp conditions can lead to mould which can then cause respiratory issues. So, keeping your windows as clean and dry as possible can help tackle the issue before it begins.
The best way to prevent or remove condensation is by ensuring your windows are sufficiently insulated. Good quality double glazing provides an extra layer between the indoor and outdoor air, minimising the difference between the two surfaces. If the insulation is compromised, the best course of action is often to replace the window.
You should also ensure your space is well-ventilated. Extractor fans can help get rid of steam, and you can also leave your window open slightly to allow steam to escape. If condensation is appearing in other areas of your home, then you may benefit from a dehumidifier.
Getting rid of mould
If mould does grow around your window, don’t worry. The earlier you tackle the issue the easier it will be to remove. The first step should be to identify the source of the moisture, so check the area for leaks and keep an eye out for humidity and condensation. Addressing the root cause can ensure the mould doesn’t worsen or return after cleaning.
Your next step is to remove any existing mould. In minor cases, you should be able to clean the affected area using a mixture of water and mild detergent, or a white vinegar and water mix. For more extreme cases, you can use a diluted bleach mixture made up of one part bleach to four parts warm water. Use a non-abrasive cloth to clean the area. Whatever cleaning method you use, make sure the window is completely dry afterwards and leave the window open for a while to ventilate the area.
If you’ve tried the methods above and your windows still have mould, it’s best to consult a professional mould removal service as soon as possible.
Repairing and replacing seals
All uPVC windows are installed with rubber seals which trap the air between each pane of glass. Over time, the seal may become worn or damaged and may not work as it should. Temperature changes that cause the glass to expand and contract can cause the seal to become damaged, as can harsh chemicals like cleaning agents. If your windows have become foggy between the panels, this is a sign that the seal has broken. It’s also a good idea to replace your window seals every 5–10 years to keep your windows working as they should.
If your window has a broken seal, you can replace it with a new one. To do this, pull away the old seal and check the window for any damage or blockages. You can then simply pipe a new window sealant (which can be bought in most DIY stores) into the space. Be sure to check the corners once you’re done and cover up any gaps.
“Your windows connect your home to the outside world, which can make them prone to certain issues like condensation and mould as well as general wear and tear. With the right cleaning and care routine, you can keep your windows clear and free of problems.”
“When it comes to windows, you get what you pay for. High-quality and eco-friendly options are designed with double or even triple glazing and strong seals. This not only keeps heat in your home — so you spend less on your energy bills — but they also tend to be much more durable, making care a breeze. If you’re noticing consistent problems with your windows, it’s best to replace them as soon as possible to stop the issue from worsening.”
