Witness appeal after pedestrian dies in West Norwood van collision

Witness appeal after pedestrian dies in West Norwood van collision

A witness appeal is under way after a 92-year-old pedestrian died following a collision with a van in Lambeth.

Emergency services were called to Curnick’s Lane, in the West Norwood area, at about 2.55pm on Thursday 24 September after reports of a collision involving a van and a pedestrian. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been made public, and his next of kin have been informed.

Medical responders attended alongside officers. An ambulance crew, specialist paramedics and an incident response officer were sent to the location after the call was received. The first paramedic arrived in around six minutes, but the man could not be saved. No information has been released about what the pedestrian was doing immediately before the collision, the direction of travel of the van, or the precise cause of the incident.

The van driver, a 72-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death while driving without insurance and causing death by dangerous driving. He was in custody when the appeal was issued. The arrest does not amount to a charge or a finding of guilt, and the investigation remains ongoing. No court date, charging decision or further outcome has been announced.

Investigators are asking anyone who saw the collision, was in the area at the time, or holds relevant footage to come forward. That includes recordings from vehicle cameras, private CCTV systems and doorbell cameras. Such material can help establish the sequence of events and identify any vehicles or people who may have been nearby before or after the collision.

The appeal is focused on information from the period around the emergency call on Thursday afternoon. People who did not see the impact itself may still be able to assist if they noticed the van or pedestrian on Curnick’s Lane shortly beforehand, saw the immediate aftermath, or have footage that captures the road at that time. Anyone who has already spoken to officers but later finds further video or remembers an additional detail may also be able to add to the inquiry.

Information can be provided by calling 101 and quoting reference 4346/24SEP. In an urgent situation, people should use the emergency number instead. The request for evidence does not ask members of the public to draw conclusions about responsibility; the circumstances of the fatal collision are still being established.

The appeal was issued the following day, on 25 September. It does not identify the pedestrian or disclose a suspected reason for the collision. It also does not say whether any other person was injured, whether the road was closed, or what evidence has already been recovered. These remain matters for the investigation rather than confirmed public facts. The publicly stated purpose of the appeal is to locate witnesses and recordings that may help investigators establish the circumstances.

The death is being treated as a fatal road-traffic investigation. While the inquiry continues, the public record is limited to the reported collision, the emergency response, the arrest and the request for witnesses. Further details about the victim, the vehicle and any eventual criminal process have not been confirmed. Those affected by the death are being supported, and the appeal asks the public to share relevant information respectfully and directly with the investigating team.
