Young man conquers Everest Base Camp in aid of terminally ill children

In a remarkable display of determination and adventurous spirit, Mr Aaron Lee, a finance professional based in London, recently completed a challenging expedition to Everest Base Camp. This extraordinary feat was not just a personal achievement but also a heartfelt fundraiser for the children’s charity React. React is a rapid-response charity that provides essential equipment for children diagnosed with life-shortening conditions.

Mr Lee, a Singaporean who served in the Commandos during his National Service, has always been drawn to adventurous activities. His impressive list of accomplishments includes completing a skydiving course and being a certified PADI Rescue Diver. However, his recent journey to Everest Base Camp stands out as a testament to his resilience and commitment to making a difference.

Aaron said about the charity:

“After carefully reviewing multiple charities, I chose React for its transparency and focus on immediate, practical impact, and I know that each donation will directly improve the lives of terminally ill children and their families.”

Embarking on the trek in the middle of winter, Aaron faced temperatures as low as -30°C. Despite the harsh conditions and gruelling physical demands, he successfully reached Everest Base Camp, which sits over 5,300 meters above sea level- higher than the summit of Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Europe. Through his efforts. Aaron raised £1,647 for React. His decision to support React added a profound purpose to his trek, transforming it from a personal challenge into a mission to help those in need.

Conor O’Donnabhain, Head of Fundraising at React, praised Aaron’s accomplishment:

“It is an incredible achievement to successfully navigate the world’s most famous mountain, and the funds raised will be put to good use assisting those most in need. The families we work with desperately need specialist equipment to care for their children, and we are so grateful to Aaron and all our kind supporters for enabling React to reach out to more of those who need our help. Thank you, Aaron, for doing something truly remarkable.”

Anybody who is interested in taking on a similar challenge or learning more about React’s work, can visit their website www.reactcharity.org or give the team a call at 020 8940 2575.

There can be no greater tragedy than to be told your child lives with an illness which will shorten his or her life.  React (Rapid Effective Assistance for Children with potentially Terminal Illness) exists to improve the quality of life for children with life-limiting illnesses who are living in families experiencing financial hardship.

React works to give these children comfort, dignity and where possible, greater independence. React provides a wide range of equipment from specialist wheelchairs, beds, baths, and mobility aids, to essential everyday items like washing machines and tumble dryers. React can also offer mobile home holidays in the UK and sometimes, sadly funeral and memorial expenses.
