Nearly 90% of Gen Z are distracted by tech at the Christmas dinner table, according to worrying new research.
The results of the exclusive new survey shows how modern habits are disrupting the loving connection during mealtimes the festive season is meant to inspire.
The festive season has long been a time to come together with the people we love, yet new research from Uber Eats also reveals more than a third (37%) of Brits struggle to make conversation at the Christmas dinner table.
9 in 10 Brits describe themselves as “good conversationalists”, yet 65% report being regularly distracted by tech while eating. And while over half (52%) say they want more meaningful chats with friends and family, conversation killers like “What’s new with you?” and “Tell me a fun fact about yourself” are leaving Brits feeling more disconnected than ever.

To bring back the joy of real conversation, broadcaster and conversation connoisseur Nick Grimshaw has teamed up with Uber Eats and Mowgli to help bring together a set of festive conversation cards — created to spark meaningful, surprising and entertaining chat while they share their Mowgli order.
The cards tap into shared human experiences and help diners move beyond polite small talk with questions around ‘is there a lesson you’ve learned that’s stayed with you’ to ‘what’s a mealtime tradition you’d love to start?’.

With conversational anxiety driven by fears of saying the wrong thing, a lack of shared interests or chat feeling too shallow, Grimmy’s prompts aim to reveal personal truths, ignite speculation and get people properly opening up. After all, what better way to bond than a little festive oversharing?
Nick Grimshaw said:
“I love when people open up and share their stories, and I firmly believe that the best conversations happen when people are relaxed, enjoying good food, and have their phones at bay, being present in the moment. I’m thrilled to team up with Uber Eats and Mowgli to inject some life back into dinner table discussions, giving people the tools they need to switch off the screen and turn up the chat.”
Saskia De Jongh at Uber Eats said,
“Every day, millions of us enjoy amazing food through Uber Eats. With Mowgli, we wanted to offer something extra this Christmas: delicious dishes and a moment to truly reconnect to our loved ones. After all, great stories, like great food, are meant to be shared.”
“Mowgli has always existed to enrich the lives of others, and we’re thrilled to now be able to do that in our customers’ homes. Partnering with Uber Eats and Nick Grimshaw is a brilliant way to celebrate that — and to bring people together through great food and conversation,” added Lucy Worth, Mowgli’s CEO.
The conversation cards are a true festive take on Mowgli’s core concept, which is about bringing people together over the kind of honest, home-style Indian cooking you’d find in a family kitchen. The menu ranges from comforting curries like the Mother Butter Chicken, to bright and zingy street dishes like Fenugreek Fries. Everything is designed to be shared — made even easier with delivery bundles and set menus — perfect for gathering around the table and exploring new flavours together, available for delivery exclusively via Uber Eats.
Fans can even score an in-person tutorial from Nick himself, joining him for a showstopping Mowgli feast on 16th December to see an expert host at work! Brits can nab a seat at a hosted dinner by engaging with Nick’s dinner party content on the Uber Eats UK Instagram.
No wonder common ground is hard to find – while Millennials are chatting about food (25%) and fitness (24%), Gen Z is focused on social media and memes (23%) or people they know (21%), and Boomers are stuck on holidays (41%).
This Christmas, Uber Eats and Mowgli are helping bridge the generational gap, one prompt at a time. A lucky selection of customers will have a chance to receive Nick’s conversation cards with their Mowgli order via Uber Eats across the UK from this week, while stocks last.
