New data protection fund announced for charities

Understanding and complying with data protection regulations is crucial for charities and it is good to see the DPO Centre’s Charity and Community Fund, continue for another year with an increased it’s annual funding allocation by 50 percent, now offering a total of £150,000, up from last year’s £100,000.

Data protection is not just a legal requirement for charities; it’s a trust-building element with donors, beneficiaries, and the public. Charities often handle sensitive data, including personal details of vulnerable individuals, donor information, and financial records. This data, if mishandled, can lead to breaches of privacy and trust, potentially harming the individuals involved and tarnishing the charity’s reputation.

Charities and not-for-profit organizations across the UK are invited to apply for a share of the Charity and Community fund, which will be distributed over three funding rounds throughout the year. Each round provides up to £50,000, with a portion of this allocated to each successful charity.

Since its inception in July 2022, the fund has proudly supported a diverse range of causes, offering grants of up to £10,000. “It has been an honour to support each of the fund beneficiaries so far,” says Rob Masson, CEO of The DPO Centre. “The Fund was set up to provide charities and community projects with much-needed funds to gain access to our data protection expertise. This increase ensures we remain committed to delivering this valuable support.”

The fund’s impact is evident in its success stories. The Winch, also known as The Winchester Project, is a small charity working with children and young people across Camden, North London and surrounding boroughs. The DPO Centre’s fund helped support their data protection processes and implement best practices for handing large quantities of special category personal data.

Soye Briggs, Chief Operating Officer at The Winch said, ‘Working with The DPO Centre was rewarding as they stimulated deep dive thinking around our data processes. The Community Fund enabled us to move forward on one of our strategic objectives.’

Eligible applicants for the Charity and Community Fund can include:

  • Charity or not-for-profit organizations based in the UK.
  • Organizations with a management committee of at least three unrelated individuals.
  • A bank account under the charity’s or not-for-profit’s name.
  • A commitment to participate in a post-project case study.

Each funding round selects at least four beneficiaries, with each organization able to apply for up to £10,000 towards 80% funded data protection consultancy services. Applications are welcome from previously unsuccessful organizations, though only one application per 12-month period is permitted. An independent voting process by The DPO Centre’s charity panel, comprising representatives from all business areas, determines the successful charities.

Each beneficiary will receive expert data protection advice and support from The DPO Centre’s experienced team. This holistic approach aims to empower organizations, enabling them to navigate the complexities of data protection with confidence and ease.
