The Great British Rail sale is now on! With a whopping 50% off unforgettable train journeys, this is your ticket to get out and about for half the normal price.

Up to 50% off selected routes is available to customers, with discounts available on single Advance tickets on Southern Railway. On Thameslink and Great Northern, passengers can get discounted Off-Peak Day Return tickets.

Upto 50% off rail travel in the Great British Rail sale 2025

Over half a million discounted tickets will be available to destinations across England and Wales and on cross-border trips into Scotland. However, passengers can only claim up to 50% off selected advance and off-peak rail tickets from 14 January to 20 January 2025, so you need to be quick!

Whether it’s a city break, family holiday or countryside escape, passengers are encouraged to make the most of this sale to get to popular destinations across the country, and this year marks 200 years of the modern railway, and to celebrate the milestone anniversary, GTR has slashed prices on more than 2,000 tickets across its network.

Explorers can bag up to 50% off leisure trips, with many tickets starting from as little as £3.50. This means cheaper trips to popular coastal destinations like Brighton, Eastbourne and Portsmouth.

Day trippers north of London can also look forward to low-cost days out, with a trip from St Albans to the capital costing just £9.50. Customers can travel from Hertford North to London for only £7.70 or from Cambridge to London for £15.90.

Children’s tickets are included in the Rail Sale. On selected journeys, up to four children can travel for £2 each, when travelling with an Adult who has a Rail Sale ticket, and children under five can travel for free.

GTR’s Customer Service Director, Jenny Saunders, said: “To celebrate 200 years since the birth of the modern railway, we’ve significantly reduced ticket prices on many routes to help customers explore new destinations. With new year’s resolutions often focusing on getting outdoors more and visiting new places, the nationwide Rail Sale is launching at the perfect time. Seats are limited, so don’t miss your chance to bag a bargain!”

Customers have until midnight on Monday, 20 January, to book their tickets in the Rail Sale. Tickets can be used for journeys starting from Friday 17 January up until Monday 31 March (check the Southern, Great Northern and Thameslink websites for T&Cs).

Tickets must be bought at least 3 days prior to travel on Thameslink and Great Northern, and 5 days prior to travel on Southern.

This sale is available online. The Great British Rail Sale Tickets are selected Advance or Off-Peak tickets with fares discounted by individual participating Train Companies, up to 50% off the equivalent full-price Advance ticket fare.

Where a participating Train Company does not offer Advance tickets, Off-Peak ticket fares may be offered as an alternative. Great British Rail Sale Tickets are not available on all routes or all journeys and may not represent the lowest available fare for a particular journey.

Great British Rail Sale tickets are not refundable unless the service you are booked to travel on is delayed or cancelled and you choose not to travel.

Railcard discounts do not apply to Great British Rail Sale Tickets, and no other discounts can be used in conjunction with the Great British Rail Sale Tickets.

Great British Rail Sale Tickets are valid only on the date and train shown on the ticket and seat reservation and are non-refundable. Changes to the time or date of travel are possible before departure of the first reserved train. Differences in fare and administration fees may apply.
