The Hill Group’s SoloHaus homes to feature on Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces with George Clarke

The final episode follows the journey of the innovative modular homes from manufacture to installation, alongside the story of former resident Mark Otter

Award-winning housebuilder The Hill Group’s innovative SoloHaus homes will feature in the 2026 series of Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces with George Clarke, showcasing how specially designed modular housing can provide a route out of homelessness. The final episode, which will air on Friday 16 October, follows the journey of the homes from manufacture and transportation to installation at Leroy Street in Southwark, alongside the personal story of former SoloHaus resident Mark Otter, from Bristol.

The new series, produced by Plum Productions for Channel 4, explores how people are responding to the ongoing economic squeeze and the changing housing landscape, including those choosing to downsize or embrace smaller, more innovative forms of accommodation. The series will feature a diverse range of projects, from people transforming unconventional structures such as fire engines and horseboxes into homes, through to pioneering modular housing solutions.

SoloHaus offers a different perspective on the micro-home concept, demonstrating how compact, thoughtfully designed modular homes can provide safe, secure and independent accommodation for people experiencing homelessness.

The programme was filmed at Leroy Street, where eight SoloHaus homes were donated to Southwark Council by Hill through its Foundation 200 initiative. Filming followed the project through several stages, capturing the demolition of the existing car park, the manufacture and finishing of the homes at Hill’s manufacturing facility in Shrewsbury, their transportation by lorries to London and the installation on site.

The programme also includes an interview with Andy Hill OBE, Founder and Group Chief Executive of The Hill Group, explaining the concept behind SoloHaus and Foundation 200. Launched in 2019 to mark the company’s 20th anniversary, the £15 million philanthropic initiative saw Hill pledge to donate 200 fully equipped modular homes to local authorities and homelessness charities.

The Southwark project provided George Clarke with an insight into the importance of having a diverse housing offer and how innovative forms of accommodation can help local authorities respond to homelessness and housing need. Southwark Council’s team highlighted the important role the donated SoloHaus homes will play in helping address homelessness within the borough.

Alongside the development story, Amazing Spaces with George Clarke features former SoloHaus resident Mark Otter, who spent many years experiencing homelessness before moving into one of eight SoloHaus homes donated and installed by Hill on Derby Street in Bristol and managed by Places for People.

Mark left the Army following an injury and subsequently experienced several challenges, including addiction and mental health difficulties. He lived in a SoloHaus for 18 months, giving him a secure place to live while he worked with support services to rebuild his confidence, regain his independence and get his life back on track.

As part of the programme’s ‘Grand Reveal’, Mark meets George Clarke at Leroy Street and reveals one of the completed SoloHaus homes to him. Together, they explore the design and purpose of the home and discuss Mark’s own experience of living in one, providing a first-hand perspective on how having a stable place to call home can be an important first step towards rebuilding a life.

George Clarke said:

“SoloHaus is a brilliant example of how thoughtful, innovative design can have a genuinely transformative impact on people’s lives. What makes this project particularly inspiring is that it began with a business recognising an opportunity to work alongside charities and local authorities to create a practical solution to homelessness.”

“Ultimately, though, this project is about the people whose lives are changed by it. SoloHaus homes provide more than just a roof over someone’s head; they offer safety, stability and the chance for a fresh start. Meeting Mark and hearing his personal experience was incredibly powerful. It brought home the profound difference that a dignified place to live can make to someone who has experienced homelessness, and the life-changing impact that support like this can have.”

Andy Hill OBE, Founder and Group Chief Executive of The Hill Group, said:

“I believe that everyone deserves a secure and comfortable place to call home. Foundation 200 was created with the ambition of finding a practical and meaningful solution for people experiencing homelessness. By bringing together designers, housing professionals and other experts, we were able to create a high-quality, purpose-built space that provides a safe and dignified place to live.”

“It is fantastic that George and the production team were able to follow the journey of these homes, from manufacture through to installation, while also hearing directly from Mark about the difference a SoloHaus home has made to his life. Mark’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that stable accommodation can have. Having a secure place to call home can provide the foundation people need to regain stability, rebuild their lives and move forward with confidence.”

Mark Otter said:

“Living in a SoloHaus gave me something I hadn’t had for a long time — somewhere that was mine and where I could feel safe. When you’ve been living on the streets, having your own front door, your own bed and somewhere you can come back to makes a huge difference. The 18 months I spent living in a SoloHaus gave me the breathing space and stability I needed to start dealing with everything that had happened in my life. It helped me believe that I could move forward again.”

Purpose-built for single people, SoloHaus homes arrive fully furnished and ready for installation on a prepared site. Each home provides residents with their own front door, kitchen, bathroom and living space, offering privacy, dignity and independence. Residents also benefit from essential items to support their transition into living in an independent home, such as cutlery, bedding and linen, and toiletries. The homes have a 60-year lifespan and are built to Future Homes Standards, exceeding building regulations for energy efficiency and sound insulation.
