How to listen to AO3 Fanfiction with text to speech

You have found an AO3 story you want to hear, but there is no recording to play. A text-to-speech browser extension can read an accessible chapter aloud instead. You keep the original page, choose a voice, and follow the story without needing a separate audiobook version.

CastReader adds that listening option to supported AO3 pages in a desktop browser. It reads the prose aloud, offers a choice of voices, and highlights the current passage. You can listen to the fanfiction you chose without waiting for someone to record it.

Your reading list with a play button

Fanfiction rarely fits neatly into an audiobook catalogue. You may be following a recently updated work, revisiting a favourite pairing or reading an obscure crossover. A browser reader starts with the text on the page rather than a separate audio catalogue, so the choice of story remains yours.

The browser route also keeps setup simple. You do not need to copy chapter after chapter into a text box. Open the work, start the reader,  and hear the prose where you found it. The chapter remains on screen, with its original text available whenever you want to read along.

Get an AO3 chapter read aloud

1. Install the Chrome or Edge extension from the official CastReader downloads. Open a single AO3 chapter, complete any normal sign-in or content-warning steps, and wait for its story text to appear.

2. Click the CastReader icon and choose Read Aloud. Select a voice available to your account and start playback. The AO3 listening guide from CastReader explains the browser route.

3. Compare the first two spoken paragraphs with the story. If you hear tags, navigation, or unrelated text, stop and use the text or content selection controls available in your extension. Begin with the chapter itself rather than a search-results page.

The voice is part of the experience

A story asks more of a voice than a short notification does. You may be listening to several pages of description followed by a quick exchange of dialogue. CastReader’s voice selection lets you find a delivery you enjoy instead of accepting one default voice for everything. A clear, natural-sounding reading can make a long chapter much more inviting.

Try a passage with both narration and dialogue. You will quickly hear whether you like the voice’s tone and pace. There is no need to chase the highest speed: fiction is something to enjoy, and a sentence sometimes needs a little room for a joke or a reveal to land. Once the voice feels right, leave it running and get back to the story.

CastReader has a limited free tier. Check the voice picker and remaining reading allowance before a long chapter; some voices and faster speeds require Pro. Start at a pace available on your plan, then adjust it until dialogue and descriptions are comfortable to follow.

See the line you are hearing

Highlighting makes it easy to glance back at the text without searching the whole page. That is useful when a character’s name sounds unfamiliar, a conversation changes direction, or you simply want to reread a favourite line. You can hear most of a scene and still see exactly how the author wrote a particular sentence.

Read any author’s notes separately when they matter: a chapter extractor may leave them out of the narration. In AO3’s Entire Work view, multiple chapters can appear on one page. That differs from automatically opening the next chapter, and extraction should be checked at chapter boundaries. A single chapter is the simpler starting point.

When there is no podfic of the story you want

A podfic is a person’s recorded performance, with their own acting choices and interpretation. Generated narration is different. It lets you listen to an accessible chapter even when nobody has recorded it. If a favourite work also has a podfic, the two can be enjoyed for different reasons.

In the single-chapter workflow, use AO3’s navigation to open the next chapter, wait for it to load, and restart playback. Keep the chapter link if you want to return later. Use stories you are authorised to access, and obtain permission before sharing an audio adaptation of someone else’s work.

For an evening when you still want the story but have had enough screen time, the starting point can be the tab already open in front of you. Choose a voice, play a few paragraphs, and see whether you want to keep listening. An AO3 reading list does not need to become an audiobook collection before you can enjoy it by ear.
