Gen Z patients are dramatically ageing due to tech neck, presenting necks typical of a 40-year-old.
Dr. Ed Robinson, one of the UK’s leading aesthetic doctors, has seen a 100% increase of patients requesting aesthetic treatment to solve these physical signs of their reliance on technology.
He said: “People are discovering that a constant downward gaze at their phones or iPads is causing an early onset of wrinkles around the neck.
“The average adult spends over 5 hours per day looking down at their devices, proving why so many are presenting these symptoms of premature ageing.
“It is unnatural for our heads to be facing downwards for prolonged periods of time which has ultimately caused this problem.
“It used to be only people over the age of 40 who would visit with concerns over crepey skin around the neck, but recently a surge of younger people in their early 20s are facing similar insecurities. They are presenting with necks of a 40 something old.
“They are constantly flexing the neck to look at devices, ageing them beyond their years.
“This is a worrying display of the impact technology is having on our appearance.”
Studies show that the average adult head weighs 10-12 pounds but when the head is tilted forward, 400% more force is exerted on the neck.
The NHS anaesthetist adds: “I can administer skin boosters and dermal fillers to smooth out the skin surface, fill in wrinkles and add volume to areas of the neck which have lost their elasticity.
“However, this treatment is not targeted at the younger generation.
“I am now turning away multiple individuals in their twenties who are requesting chin filler to restore their side profiles and necks.
“Interestingly, many don’t need any filler correction but actually just need to address their posture due to repeated stooping. This would make a huge difference to their overall attractiveness.
‘Of course dermal fillers can improve appearance but really people just need to learn to stand up properly and look up from their phones more!
“I do not consider providing unnecessary chin filler if their problems can be simply solved by being less hunched.
“Although correcting posture takes a lot of behavioural reinforcement and time, it is free and will save issues in the long run.
“Instead of turning to dermal filler for a quick fix, being mindful of their posture will save patients a lot of money and future health problems.”
