Leading the way is Manchester, with 20.42% green space and 17.50% of tree canopy cover, 418 EV charging stations across the city, 2.9% of people cycle 5 days a week for any purpose, and air quality, like many of the cities in the UK, stands at 2. Overall, the top ten greenest cities in the UK include:

  1. Manchester

  2. London & Southampton

  3. Bristol

  4. Glasgow

  5. Sheffield & Dundee

  6. Stoke-on-Trent

  7. Nottingham

  8. Leeds

  9. Bradford

  10. Cardiff

The Northern city also has 157 playgrounds and open spaces, which account for much of this green space and 16 lakes.

Following Manchester, London and Southampton share the second spot. Both locations have expansive green space and tree canopy cover, along with their ongoing commitment to reducing emissions, making them two of the most environmentally focused cities in the UK.

Bristol, renowned for its long-term low-carbon strategies, including the Bristol Climate Protection Plan and Sustainable Energy Strategy, ranks fourth. The city’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while promoting sustainable energy and public transport highlights its forward-thinking approach to environmental sustainability.

Other cities that make the top five include Glasgow, Sheffield, and Dundee.

These cities are leading the way in creating more sustainable, resilient urban environments, and many others across the UK are also making significant progress. The ranking highlights the importance of green initiatives and how cities can combat the growing challenges climate change poses.

Gregor Neeve, Director of Ecology and Nature Markets at Thomson Environmental Consultants, comments:

“The importance of green infrastructure cannot be overstated. It offers various environmental, economic, and social benefits, such as reducing stormwater runoff, enhancing biodiversity, improving air quality, and promoting public health. By integrating these solutions, cities are not only helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change but also improving the quality of life for their residents.

“While these cities have made significant progress, there is still much to be done to meet the UK’s ambitious climate goals, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 100% by 2050. Green infrastructure is an essential part of these efforts, offering a practical, long-term solution to the challenges posed by climate change.”
